DMXs powerful work confronted an American hell of trauma and poverty – The Guardian

The rapper, who has died aged 50, parlayed his life’s difficulties into thrilling, combative, witheringly witty music Sat 10 Apr 2021 07.25 EDT Listening to a DMX song from the late 1990s is like riding a wrecking ball through a gated community. The music video for Stop Being Greedy – one of many confrontational highlights from the rapper’s 1998 Def Jam debut, It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot – shows DMX hunting a wealthy white man across a mansion, before eventually feeding the poor soul like a T-bone steak to his pet pitbull; the rapper’s exhilarating, half-barked vocals gave the sense that he wanted to eat the rich. It’s a song about the poor feeling so ignored that they have no choice but to confront the ruling classes (“Ribs is touching, so don’t make me wait / Fuck around and I’m gon...

You should still be wearing a mask, even if you got the COVID-19 vaccine. Here’s why. – SFGate

As more Americans get vaccinated — and more proof, albeit still inconclusive, emerges that the COVID-19 vaccines more than likely inhibit the spread of the coronavirus — it feels as if the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel is near. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has relaxed its guidelines for social distancing and mask-wearing, permitting fully vaccinated people to congregate indoors with one another in small groups, unmasked. (There’s some caveats: If you’re immunocompromised or older, hold off on indoor gatherings for now even if you’re vaccinated.) A CDC study of health care workers and first-line responders in the United States — some of the most exposed to COVID-19 — found that infections, including asymptomatic ones that could lead to trans...

Why wasnt Prince Philip called king? – CBS News

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died on Friday at age 99. The prince married Queen Elizabeth II five years before she became queen – but when she was crowned, he wasn't given the title of king. That's because Prince Philip, who is actually a former prince of Denmark and Greece, was never in line to the British throne.  Prince Philip married Queen Elizabeth II in 1947 and she became queen in 1952 after the death of her father, King George VI. She later gave her husband the title of prince. This title wasn't a slight to Prince Philip – he wasn't supposed to be called king or prince. His title was Duke of Edinburgh until February 22, 1957 when the palace released a statement: "The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm bearing date 22nd February, ...

‘Trouble filling our schedules;’ Rural clinics, pharmacies seek to fill open vaccine slots as hesitancy looms – USA TODAY

When St. James Parish Hospital in Louisiana began COVID-19 vaccinations this winter, it routinely would administer 500 daily shots and could not keep pace with the long lines of vaccine seekers.  But as Louisiana joined a cascading number of states to waive age restrictions and allow all adults to get vaccinated, hospital leaders are finding more appointments going unfilled. The hospital that serves a Mississippi River community of about 22,000 no longer hosts the large vaccination events, instead directing about 200 doses each week through smaller clinics and targeting hard-to-reach populations. It's a fast-changing scenario hospital leaders did not imagine would happen so quickly.  "We always felt the vaccine was like gold and it was precious," said MaryEllen Pratt, CEO, St. James Paris...

How To Keep Your Heart Healthy, Even During The Pandemic : Shots – Health News – NPR

These days, it's easy to feel vulnerable when it comes to your health. I talk about that a lot with my patients, many of whom are feeling heightened fear and uncertainty during the pandemic. The best part of my job as a primary care doctor is reassuring them that we're not powerless, even against some of the biggest threats to our health. In the case of COVID-19, we can do things like get vaccinated. There's even more within our control when it comes to heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., even during 2020. On average, it kills about 655,000 Americans each year. Heart disease ...
