South Pacific tribe that worships Prince Philip devastated by his death – Page Six

Tribe folk on a remote South Pacific island who worship Prince Philip like a god were devastated to finally hear of his death. Word quickly spread around the village of Yaohnanen – part of a tropical rainforest on the isle of Tanna with spotty communications – after the news was broken by an employee from the Vanuatu Cultural Center Saturday. The Duke of Edinburgh died peacefully at his home in Windsor Castle, England on Friday at the age of 99 after a two month illness for which he was hospitalized in February. “The people were very sad to hear of the passing of this great man,” said Jean-Pascal Wahé, the worker tasked with driving four hours to the isolated area and delivering the sad message. “He was a very important man to us all and it’s a great los...

South African variant can break through Pfizer vaccine, Israeli study says – Reuters

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The coronavirus variant discovered in South Africa can “break through” Pfizer/BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine to some extent, a real-world data study in Israel found, though its prevalence in the country is low and the research has not been peer reviewed. The study, released on Saturday, compared almost 400 people who had tested positive for COVID-19, 14 days or more after they received one or two doses of the vaccine, against the same number of unvaccinated patients with the disease. It matched age and gender, among other characteristics. The South African variant, B.1.351, was found to make up about 1% of all the COVID-19 cases across all the people studied, according to the study by Tel Aviv University and Israel’s largest healthcare provider, Clalit. But among pati...

Forty percent of Marines are declining the coronavirus vaccine, according to data obtained by CNN. There has been a 38.9 percent decline rate, but the Marines are providing information to individuals to encourage them to get the vaccine. “The Navy and Marine Corps are providing substantial educational information broadly, and working with commands to ensure Marines, Sailors, and beneficiaries have accurate information regarding the safety and efficacy of the vaccines to encourage individuals to get immunized,” Capt. Andrew Wood, a Marines spokesman, told The Hill in a statement. The data showed that 75,500 Marines have received the vaccine and 48,000 have declined it. Overall, the acceptance rate is 61.1 percent. The numbers for the data include reserves, active-duty and Indi...

The state did not report any new deaths. Vaccines: Oregon reported 54,790 newly administered doses, which includes 30,068 on Friday and the remainder from previous days. Matthew Perry post-and-deletes BTS photo of Friends reunion – Page Six

Could he be anymore excited? Matthew Perry took to Instagram Saturday to share a behind-the-scenes flick of himself prepping for the upcoming “Friends” reunion, only to delete the post moments later. “Seconds before eating a makeup brush, not to mention reuniting with my friends,” he captioned the selfie of himself in a makeup chair. The post surpassed 27K likes before the actor deleted it from his account. Further confirmation can be found in co-star David Schwimmer, who told Andy Cohen in early March that the cast and crew would begin production “in a little over a month.” “I’m heading out to LA,” he said at the time. “So, finally, I mean, we figured out a way to film it safely, and there’s going to be a portion of it that we film outside bec...

Biden administration wont surge vaccines to virus hotspots; Alabama, Utah lift mask mandates. Latest COVID-19 updates – USA TODAY

President Joe Biden's administration said Friday additional vaccine doses will not be delivered to states seeing surges in COVID-19 cases, despite appeals from local leaders and some health experts. The administration says its current rollout plan, based on state adult population, is "fair and equitable." "We're not even halfway through our vaccination program so now is not the time to change course on vaccine allocation," said Jeff Zients, coordinator of the White House COVID-19 task force, during Friday's briefing. "This pandemic has hit every state and every county, hard," he added.  Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she directly requested additional doses from Biden in a recent phone call. The state's seven-day average of new daily cases reached 6,429 on Thursday, its highest point ...

Could face masks prevent more than just COVID-19? – The Jerusalem Post

People who suffer from allergy symptoms may find some relief by wearing a mask, Israeli research has shown. Allergy season in Israel is underway. It usually begins at the end of February and lasts until May, according to the Health Ministry, which reported that allergies affect 30% of the Israeli population. A study by Galilee Medical Center and Bar-Ilan University published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology showed that 40% of 215 nurses who wore either surgical masks or N95 masks experienced less sneezing and suffered less from having runny or stuffy noses. As the rate of coronavirus infection declines in Israel and the Health Ministry considers allowing people to go mask-free in outdoor settings after Independence Day, Dr. Amiel Dror, who led the study...
