Study: Single COVID Vaccine Dose Insufficient for Individuals Who Had Mild Cases of Virus – NBC Chicago

Researchers at Northwestern University’s Institute for Policy Research say a new study has indicated that one dose of two-dose COVID-19 vaccines does not provide sufficient protection against the virus in individuals who had previously had mild or asymptomatic cases of the disease, meaning that those individuals are still advised to get both doses of the vaccine. According to a press release from the researchers, the study had examined whether individuals who had previous mild or asymptomatic cases of the coronavirus could achieve a high-level of immunity with only one dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, rather than the recommended two doses. The study did not investigate the differences between mild COVID cases and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in terms of t...

Disinfecting surfaces to prevent Covid often all for show, CDC advises – CNN

"CDC determined that the risk of surface transmission is low, and secondary to the primary routes of virus transmission through direct contact droplets and aerosols," Vincent Hill, Chief of the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch, said on a CDC-sponsored telephone briefing. Hill said the risk of transmission from touching a surface, while small, is elevated indoors. Outdoors, the sun and other factors can destroy viruses, Hill said. The virus dies "rapidly" on porous surfaces but can persist longer on hard, indoor surfaces. Research also suggested that surface transmission was more likely in the first 24 hours after a person is infected, and that households where one person had Covid-19 did have lower transmission rates when the household cleaned and disinfected surfaces. So while keep...

Texas A&M scientists identify new variant of coronavirus called BV-1 – KPRC Click2Houston

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Scientists at Texas A&M University have identified a new variant of the coronavirus. The variant was discovered by researchers at the school’s Global Health Research Complex. It’s called the BV-1 variant because of its origins in the Brazos Valley, scientists said. The case was identified in a saliva sample taken from an off-campus A&M student on March 5, and the student tested positive again on March 25. Scientists said this may indicate the BV-1 variant causes a longer infection in adults age 18-24 than is typical for COVID-19. The student only suffered mild, cold-like symptoms and those symptoms were resolved by April 2. Scientists said this variant is concerning because of its genetic make-up. “We do not at present know the full significance of this v...
