COVID-19 can kill even months after recovery – new study – The Jerusalem Post

COVID-19 survivors have an almost 60% increased risk of death up to six months after infection compared to non-infected people, according to a massive study published over the weekend in the peer-reviewed journal Nature. That is the equivalent of about eight extra deaths per 1,000 patients over six months. “When we are accounting for COVID-19 deaths, the actual total of deaths is much higher,” Ziyad Al-Aly, director of the Clinical Epidemiology Center at Washington University in St. Louis and the Chief of Research and Education Service at Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System, told The Jerusalem Post. He was the lead researcher on the study.  Al-Aly said that most deaths caused by long-term COVID-19 complications are not recorded as COVID-19 deaths. As such, h...

Chadwick Boseman NFT Sparks Controversy, Gets Redesign Following Late Actor’s Oscars Loss – Deadline

An NFT created of the late Chadwick Boseman for the 93rd Academy Awards is being redesigned after sparking backlash online. Andre Oshea, one of the artists hired to produce the non-fungible token, took to Instagram Monday to announce the redesign, and to apologize “for any upset caused.” “I now recognize that Chadwick’s face is a triggering reminder of his death,” he wrote, “rather than his life.” Rising to prominence in the last few months, NFTs are one-of-a-kind digital artworks that are redeemed via a blockchain. While an NFT could be one of many things, including a JPEG, a GIF or an MP3, Oshea’s was a golden sculpture of Boseman’s head modeled in 3D, off of his appearance in the Disney-Marvel smash Black Panther. Piers Morgan slams Oscars telecast as a ‘howlingly dull trainwreck amid new ratings low – Fox News

Add Piers Morgan to the long list of Oscar viewers who weren’t happy with the display at the 93rd Academy Awards on Sunday. The talking head, who also pens opinion editorials from time to time for the Daily Mail as Editor-at-Large, wrote another on Monday – this time blasting the ceremony as a "howlingly dull trainwreck" and admonished Hollywood’s A-listers – or lack thereof – for "preaching" to the world in some acceptance speeches. "The Oscars arrivals ceremony, which I've covered many times, is usually the glitziest, most glamorous and star-studded collection of human beings amassed on Planet Earth," Morgan, 56, wrote in his lengthy diatribe. "I didn't even recognize most of the small number of 'stars' who tottered down the shortened rug – 'carpet' seems an excessive description gi...

Daniel Kaluuya Photo: Handout/A.M.P.A.S. via Getty Images Last night, Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for his memorable portrayal of Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. Accepting the award, he gave a standout speech, in which he spoke briefly, but to indelible effect, about his parents’ sex lives. In short, it was an unforgettable occasion all around. But then came the media Q&A, during which one member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association sounded conspicuously hazy on the details of Kaluuya’s win. Identifying herself as a longtime fan of Kaluuya’s work, South African journalist Margaret ...

Here’s how the Internet Archive digitizes 78rpm records – The Verge

The Internet Archive, in partnership with George Blood LP, has been working since 2016 to digitize thousands of 78rpm records, some of which were made in the early 1900s. Over 250,000 records have been preserved, and the archive posted a Twitter thread yesterday detailing how each record is cleaned and filed away. At the Internet Archive, this is how we digitize #78 rpm records. Our partner @georgeblood_lp has perfected this technique, digitizing with 4 different styli at once. We put as much effort into capturing the #metadata as we do digitizing the music. pic.twitter.com/dn4EjXTS9z— Internet Archive (@internetarchive) April 25, 2021 Each record is cleaned on a machine that sprays distilled water onto its surface. A little vacuum arm then sucks up the water, along with ...

Coronavirus in Oregon: Hospitalizations surge past 300, setting up renewed business restrictions – OregonLive

The Oregon Health Authority on Monday reported one COVID-19 death and 630 new coronavirus cases as the number of statewide hospitalizations surged – setting up a shutdown of indoor dining in hard-hit counties this week. Gov. Kate Brown is expected to announce Tuesday which counties will face renewed restrictions for restaurants and gyms, but the list appears likely to include Multnomah and Clackamas counties, based on preliminary state data. The looming restrictions were triggered Monday because Oregon reported 319 people actively hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19, exceeding the 300-person benchmark set by Brown earlier this month. With average cases at 818 a day and projected to continue climbing into early May, state officials also revised quarantine guidance for people...

Disney+ Drops ‘The Falcon And The Winter Soldier’ Poster Featuring Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson As Captain America – Deadline

Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson just got a major upgrade in the latest poster for Disney+’s The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. On Monday the Disney streaming platform dropped a poster for the spin-off series, which also stars Sebastian Stan, featuring Mackie’s Falcon wielding Captain America’s shield and donning a fresh and patriotic super suit, complete with accents and embellishments reminiscent of Chris Evan’s Captain America. The first character poster for Mackie’s Sam Wilson saw the superhero sporting a suit with a darker motif. The poster reveal comes just days after The Falcon And The Winter Soldier finale, which revealed Mackie’s Falcon as the next iteration of the iconic Avenger. However in the season finale, Sam Wilson isn’t the only Captain America as John Walker’s (Wyat...
