Inject the Vaccine Fan Fiction Directly Into My Veins – The New York Times

There are plenty of earnestly respectful vaccine selfies, where the inoculated person bares a shoulder and thanks science for their shot. But the array of vaccine brands, each with their own protocols and typical symptoms, has made room for them to be interpreted as an internet-wide personality test, with all the irrational identification of an astrological sign or a BuzzFeed quiz. When a young TikToker called @idrinkurmilkshake winkingly identified herself as a member of the “Pfizer Gang,” she kicked off a joking rivalry that tore ebulliently through the internet. “Umm, only hot people get the Pfizer vaccine,” she said, smugly tucking a gleaming curl behind an ear. “If you got Moderna, then I don’t know what to tell you, queen.” In another popular video, @ellynmariemarsh appears on both ...

CDC says vaccine guidance for pregnant people has not changed despite directors comments – CBS News

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention walked back a statement its director made on Friday about the agency's recommendation surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy, clarifying that the agency's guidance has not changed. Speaking at a White House COVID-19 briefing on Friday, CDC head Dr. Rochelle Walensky  said that the "CDC recommends that pregnant people receive the COVID-19 vaccine," citing a new study that found no evidence to suggest that the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines pose risk during pregnancy. In an email to CBS News, a CDC spokesperson said the CDC's guidance for pregnant people had not changed from its March recommendation, which is that "pregnant people are eligible and can receive a COVID-19 vaccine" and clarified that the guidance "has alway...

Glenn Close explains which parts of her viral Da Butt moment at the Oscars were scripted – USA TODAY

Glenn Close's iconic Oscars moment on Sunday wasn't quite as spontaneous as it seemed. The actress, 74, was nominated for best supporting actress for "Hillbilly Elegy," which went to Yuh-jung Youn of "Minari." But Close's most memorable appearance of the night was late in the show during a game segment called "Questlove's Oscars Trivia," in which Lil Rel Howery went around the room to ask audience members about certain songs that Questlove played from the stage. After putting Andra Day and Daniel Kaluuya to the test, all eyes were on Close as she was asked a question about the 1988 song "Da Butt." Close ended up schooling the crowd on the song before proceeding to actually do "Da Butt" dance, shaking her booty before letting out a big laugh and returning to her seat. Reflecting on the now...

Netflix has a jam-packed summer movie slate this year – The Verge

Netflix released its summer movie lineup on Tuesday, and it’s looking like the streaming service will be jam-packed with new movies in the coming months. The sheer volume should help Netflix compete with Disney, which is gearing up for the July 9th premiere of Black Widow on Disney Plus and in theaters, and WarnerMedia, which is releasing each of its 2021 theatrical titles (such as the new Space Jam) day and date on HBO Max. Netflix sent me a preview of what’s coming ahead of Tuesday’s announcement, and honestly, there were an overwhelming amount of titles to sift through. It seems like there will be a lot to watch! I’ve picked out just a few that caught my eye and compiled them in this post, but if you want to see the full slate, check out Netflix’s blog or watch this sizzle reel. ...

How COVID-19 Worms Its Way Into the Brain – Explaining Baffling Neurological Symptoms – SciTechDaily

Study helps explain baffling neurological symptoms — and why they’re so unpredictable. New research offers an up-close view of how SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can spread to the brain. The study helps explain the alarming array of neurological symptoms reported in some patients with COVID-19, as well as why some patients suffer severe neurological effects while others experience none at all. The researchers report evidence that SARS-CoV-2 can infect both the nerve cells that power our brains (neurons) and the cells in the brain and spinal cord that support and protect neurons (astrocytes).
