Oscars Best Picture 2022 Preview: Dune, Soggy Bottom, and More – IndieWire

"Dune," "Nightmare Alley," and a new Paul Thomas Anderson film are already high on Oscar pundits' lists. “The Card Counter,” “House of Gucci,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Dune,” and “The French Dispatch” MGM/Netflix/Searchlight/Warner Bros. Before anyone takes issue with looking ahead to the 2022 Oscars just days after “Nomadland” won Best Picture at the 2021 Oscars, just remember the Academy has already set a date of February 27, 2022 for the 94th Academy Awards. That’s right, just a slim 10 months separates the two Oscar ceremonies and, considering it’s almost May, it’s not too early to begin looking ahead at the awards season to come. One thing we know for sure about the 202...

CDC: Pfizer, Moderna vaccines 94 percent effective against hospitalization in older adults | TheHill – The Hill

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were 94 percent effective in preventing hospitalization for COVID-19 among people age 65 and older, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study released Wednesday. The study provides new evidence on the benefits of vaccination, and builds on results from the clinical trials by adding real-world evidence from 417 hospitalized adults in 14 states from January to March.  "This multisite U.S. evaluation under real-world conditions suggests that vaccination provided protection against COVID-19–associated hospitalization among adults aged [65 and older]," the study states. The virus is particularly dangerous for older people, so the results in that age group are particularly important. The 94 percent efficacy rate was for pe...

COVID-19 alters human genes, explaining mystery behind coronavirus ‘long haulers’ – Study Finds

LUBBOCK, Texas — For some COVID-19 patients, getting over their infection is just the beginning of the recovery. Over the last year, COVID “long haulers” have continued experiencing a variety of symptoms months after the virus clears. These include anything from skin problems, to shortness of breath, to losing the sense of taste or smell. Now, researchers say they may know why this is happening. A new study finds coronavirus actually causes long-term changes to an infected patient’s genes. Specifically, scientists reveal the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, creates long-lasting changes to human gene expression. These tiny spikes cover the surface of coronavirus cells. They allow the virus to bind to certain receptors on human cells and hijack their functions — le...

He shares this after he’s warned June that her refusal to reveal where the Handmaids are will result in Hannah being hurt, which in Gilead can mean everything from having an eye torn out to death. June’s response is to tell him to go fuck himself. It stands to reason that he would be confused. Up till now, her anger, motivation, and extremely questionable decisions have been tied up with her maternal instinct to protect Hannah. Boy dies of coronavirus in Hawaii after traveling with fully vaccinated parents – Fox News

Hawaii health officials confirmed the state’s first pediatric coronavirus-related death in a child who had been visiting the state with his fully vaccinated parents. The child, who officials said was between the ages of 0-10, had "known underlying health conditions" and began experiencing symptoms shortly after arriving in the islands. The child was taken to a hospital where he died, a news release said. No further details about the child or his parents were released by officials, and it was not clear where he may have contracted the virus. A health department spokesperson told Hawaii News Now that both of his parents had tested negative before traveling from the mainland to Hawaii, but the child had not been. Brooks Baehr, the spokesperson, said the boy’s symptoms came on so suddenly...
