Chronic Sinus Inflammation Linked to Changed Brain Activity, Study Finds – Gizmodo

Photo: AP (AP) Your always-congested sinuses might be a harbinger of more trouble down the road, new research out Friday suggests. The small study found evidence of a link between chronic sinus inflammation and altered, possibly harmful brain activity. The findings don’t necessarily prove that the two things are directly connected, but they do highlight the need for more study. The sinuses are the hollow spaces around our nasal cavity and are thought to mainly keep the nose moist and protected by providing mucus. They can become occasionally inflamed for brief periods of time through infections, but some people are unlucky enough to develop chronic sinus inflammation, or chronic rhinosinusitis. Of course, no one is feeling their best with a blocked nose, and there have been hints i...

Today I learned Disney is making a retractable lightsaber, and I need to see it – The Verge

To whom it may concern at The Walt Disney Company and / or Lucasfilm: Show me the damn lightsaber. I know you have a real one now. And it’s time to fess up. Let’s backtrack a bit. Yesterday, at a seemingly routine press event for the upcoming launch of Disneyland’s new Avengers Campus area on June 4th, Josh D’Amaro, the chairman of Disney parks, ended his presentation with a surprise reveal of a new lightsaber. According to tweets from theme park reporter Carlye Wisel, who attended the press conference, the lightsaber was not the typical IRL lightsaber of “a giant light up stick attached to a neat-looking hilt.” In fact, it was the holy grail of replica sabers: one that can fully extend and retract its blade, just like the “real” lightsabers in the films. I just attended...

To Speed Vaccination, Some Call for Delaying Second Shots – The New York Times

The prospect of a fourth wave of the coronavirus, with new cases climbing sharply in the Upper Midwest, has reignited a debate among vaccine experts over how long to wait between the first and second doses. Extending that period would swiftly increase the number of people with the partial protection of a single shot, but some experts fear it could also give rise to dangerous new variants. In the United States, two-dose vaccines are spaced three to four weeks apart, matching what was tested in clinical trials. But in Britain, health authorities have delayed doses by up to 12 weeks in order to reach more people more quickly. And in Canada, which has precious few vaccines to go around, a government advisory committee recommended on Wednesday that second doses be delayed even longer, up to f...
