Health officials say double-mutant coronavirus variant likely to arrive in Hawaii – Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Public health officials in Hawaii are on alert for a new COVID-19 variant that has emerged in California and are urgently advising eligible residents to get vaccinated as soon as possible to avoid serious illness or hospitalization. The B.1.1.7 strain from the United Kingdom has a lesser presence in Hawaii and the B.1.351 strain first found in South Africa is here to an even smaller extent, according to Dr. Edward Desmond, administrator of the State Laboratories Division. When Bob Marley Was Shot in His Jamaican Home – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

In 2021, it’s nearly impossible to imagine the biggest recording artist in the country getting ambushed by a gang of gunmen in his own home. But that’s what happened to Bob Marley in Jamaica at the peak of his popularity. Marley was preparing to play a unity concert, Smile Jamaica, at the time. If you’ve seen footage of the concert, you know Marley had the wounds to back up his account. Yet the bullet holes only make up part of the story; the motivation behind the assault remains unclear nearly 45 years after the fact. Theories abound as to how and why gunmen entered Marley’s home, which doubled as his studio and rehearsal space. And they start with the two warring parties in contemporary Jamaican politics. Britain mourns Prince Philip, longtime consort of Queen Elizabeth II, as funeral plans are awaited – CNN

The news that Philip, also known by his official title of the Duke of Edinburgh, had "passed away peacefully" at the age of 99 was announced Friday by the Queen "with deep sorrow," Buckingham Palace said. The duke had recently spent a month in two London hospitals, undergoing heart surgery and treatment for an infection, before returning in mid-March to Windsor Castle, where he died on Friday morning. The timing of Philip's death, with Covid-19 restrictions still in place across the UK, means the nation's public expressions of grief will be constrained. The royal household and the UK government have urged the public not to gather or lay flowers outside royal residences, as has happened in the past. Huge banks of bouquets were left by well-wishers outside Buckingham Palace, ...

Prince Philip: Queen Elizabeth was ‘steady, calm’ ahead of Duke of Edinburgh’s death – Fox News

Queen Elizabeth II was at peace with the ever-increasing possibility of losing her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip following years of health troubles. Former press secretary to the Queen, Charles Anson, told People magazine on Friday that the 94-year-old monarch was prepared for Philip’s death simply because she thought about it so much where it became second nature to accept the inevitable. "She would have thought about this moment several times and her way would be to remain as steady and as calm as possible," Anson told the publication. "That comes naturally to her through her temperament and her experience." Added Anson, "In my years of working for her she was always calm, no matter what was going on. But for any human being, this is a very cathartic moment." POLICE CALLED TO ...

The Oregon Health Authority on Friday reported 560 new COVID-19 cases and one death, with nearly one in three Oregonians now at least partially vaccinated against the disease. Cases continued their upward trend, hitting their highest average in two months at 475 a day over the past week. Deschutes, Klamath, Linn and Tillamook also entered the high-risk category, with all six counties representing three-fifths of Oregon’s population. In 10 days, Oregon will begin offering COVID-19 vaccines to everyone 16 and older, a change made in response to President Joe Biden’s direction Tuesday. Fairfield County Child Contracts Measles: DPH – NBC Connecticut

The CT Department of Public Health announced Friday that a case of measles has been reported in a child in Fairfield County. The child was not yet vaccinated against measles and they were infected while traveling internationally, DPH officials said. Officials warn that measles is a highly contagious disease that can spread quickly among people who are unvaccinated. However, DPH said the majority of people exposed to the virus are not at risk because they have either been vaccinated in the past or have had measles before vaccination became routine. One dose of the measles vaccine is approximately 93% effective at preventing the virus if exposed and two doses are about 97% effective. DPH officials said two doses of the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine ar...
