A few notes on the massive objects disrupting ordinary life this week – The A.V. Club

Photo: Handout (Getty Images), Jeremie Richard (Getty Images) In a different week, the story of a volcano erupting in Iceland or a cargo ship getting stuck in the Suez Canal would be notable enough to stand on their own. Both of these events happening at the same time, though, is an unprecedented example of how people around the world react to giant stuff making life more difficult. Iceland’s Volcano Eruption Iceland has responded to the Geldingadalir volcano eruption with a healthy mixture of scientific curiosity and human absurdity. In order to safely accommodate international rubberneckers, the country has set up a live stream of the natural phenomenon that lets users experience the vicarious thrill of hanging out next to a field of deadly lava without actually burning alive in th...

Larry McMurtry, Novelist of the American West, Dies at 84 – The New York Times

He moved to the Washington area and with a partner opened his first Booked Up store in 1971, dealing in rare books. He opened the much larger Booked Up, in Archer City, in 1988 and owned and operated it until his death. In a 1976 profile of Mr. McMurtry in The New Yorker, Calvin Trillin observed his book-buying skills. “Larry knows which shade of blue cover on a copy of ‘Native Son’ indicates a first printing and which one doesn’t,” Mr. Trillin wrote. “He knows the precise value of poetry books by Robert Lowell that Robert Lowell may now have forgotten writing.” A Knack for Female Characters While much of Mr. McMurtry’s writing dealt with the West or his Texas heritage, he also wrote novels about Washington (“Cadillac Jack”), Hollywood (“Somebody’s Darling”) and Las Vegas (“The Desert Ro...

Cat-scratch bacteria linked to schizophrenia, study says – New York Post

This connection between kitties and mental illness is, disturbingly, growing increasingly strong.  A new study has found that a bacteria known for causing the disease cat-scratch fever — named for cats’ propensity for spreading it through bites and scratches — is found in the bloodstream of schizophrenics more frequently than those without the mental disorder.  The research, published this month in the journal Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases, only looked at a small contingent of people and is not definitive. But it adds to a growing body of work that supports that being infected with Bartonella bacteria can cause neurological problems.  “Our research to date continues to support a role for Bartonella species as a cause or co-factor in neuropsychiatric i...

Ebola: US health officials monitoring 27 people after possible exposure on West Africa trip – The Independent

Health officials are monitoring the condition of four people in Oregon and 23 in Washington state who may have been exposed to the Ebola virus. Those under observation have recently returned from Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Small outbreaks have been recorded in both countries. The Oregon Health Authority said they had returned to the US in early March and that the chance they have contracted the virus is low. Public health officials in Washington confirmed that almost two dozen people were being monitored in the state on Friday, following an announcement from authorities in Oregon on Thursday. Chief Medical Officer for Health Security, Preparedness and Response at the OHA Public Health Division Richard Leman said: “We want to make sure these individuals have the supp...

After You Die, Some Cells in Your Brain Become More Active – Futurism

Image by Robina Weermeijer via Unsplash / Futurism When you die, most of the cells in your brain will gradually flicker out. But some, according to a new study, will become extremely active, growing to new sizes for several hours after death. It’s morbid to think about your brain becoming more active after you’re gone, but the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) researchers behind the discovery stressed in a press release that it doesn’t mean people are conscious or that the so-called “zombie genes” that trigger this neural activity could do anything as dramatic as reawakening the dead. Instead, the study, which was published Tuesday in the journal Nature Scientific Reports, has major implications for the way neuroscientists study the brain — especially when those studies rely on h...

Khloé Kardashian packs up Cleveland house with Tristan Thompson – Page Six

Khloé Kardashian is no longer keeping up with Cleveland. The “Good American” founder announced on Instagram Friday that she and her boyfriend, Tristan Thompson, are moving out of their $3.25 million house in Bratenahl, Ohio. “I am in Cleveland packing up the Cleveland house, and this will be goodbye,” she said in her Instagram Stories, while giving a tour of the swanky home overlooking Lake Erie’s shores. “I will miss this view so much,” Kardashian added while showing the balcony and its water views. “There’s literally nothing like it.” Thompson bought the pad, which is located in an exclusive gated community, in 2015 while he was playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but listed it late last year after inking a deal with the Boston Celtics. Since...

Chrissy Teigen reveals she and John Legend had sex at the DNC – Page Six

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen once did the deed at the Democratic National Convention. The supermodel spilled the beans to James Corden during a game where she could either reveal the strangest place she’s ever had sex — or eat “bull penis.” “… One time at the Grammys I had said, ‘We had sex at that Obama thing.’ And that came out wrong, because what I actually meant was, it was that Obama thing, but wasn’t like with them or near them … I believe it was at the DNC, actually,” she said on “The Late Late Show.” A surprised Corden clarified, “Sorry, so when you said ‘that Obama thing’ you meant the Democratic National Convention, otherwise known as ‘that Obama thing’?” She said they got busy in the bathroom. But that’s not the only public place Tei...
