A Restaurant’s Quest to Preserve Indigenous Food

The yearlong pandemic closed down many restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area, but one of the most heavily mourned of these closings was Cafe Ohlone, the world’s only restaurant serving the cuisine of the Ohlone people native to Northern California. Thankfully, the closure of the restaurant’s operating space in Berkeley didn’t stop the founders, Vincent Medina (Chochenyo Ohlone of the East Bay area) and Louis Trevino (Rumsen Ohlone of the Monterey area), from continuing their work, as they shifted their focus into curated dinner boxes that allow diners to enjoy the cultural experience of Cafe Ohlone at home. I had the pleasure of enjoying one of these meals last November, arranged in a wooden box with meticulously packed ingredients and detail...

The Single Malt Revolution In India Began with this Bengaluru Distillery

Wine & Dine Text by Sushmita Sundaram. Photographed by Wamika Gera One evening in November last year, whisky experts from across the world gathered over a Zoom call to celebrate the launch of Bengaluru-based Amrut Distilleries’ latest single malt, Fusion X. Despite the video glitches and crackling audio, the mood was convivial. Whisky connoisseurs from Bengaluru rubbed virtual elbows with Scottish distillers whose families had been in the business for centuries. The bonhomie would have been familiar to Rakshit Jagdale (MD of Amrut Distilleries alongside Joint MD, Thrivikram Nikam). The goal of his final project as an MBA student in the UK, in 2002, had been “to ascertain the accepta...

Sacha Baron Cohen vs. Trump and Giuliani, Chloé Zhao makes history, Times Up still ticked: Golden Globes 2021 highs, lows and head-scratchers – Yahoo Entertainment

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler may have wanted to keep the 2021 Golden Globes a politics-free zone. But Sacha Baron Cohen didn't get that memo from the show's hosts... or he just ignored it. The Borat Subsequent Moviefilm star used his dual acceptance speeches to pointedly tweak Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump, both of whom play major (if unwitting) roles in the hit sequel. Cohen's comments functioned as the telecast's most trenchant — and hilarious — pieces of political commentary on an evening when most presenters and winners tried to turn the focus elsewhere. While Cohen's speeches inspired tears of laughter, genuine tears were shed when Hollywood legend Norman Lear, five months shy of his 99th birthday, accepted the Carol Burnett Award for his storied career, and when Simone Ledward Boseman ...

Jodie Foster explains why she thanked Aaron Rodgers at Globes: I didn’t set up Shailene and Aaron – USA TODAY

Jodie Foster raised eyebrows when she thanked Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers during her Golden Globes acceptance speech for best supporting actress in "The Mauritanian." So what was that all about? Foster excitedly explained backstage in the virtual Golden Globes media room about that call-out to Rodgers, who just happens to be engaged to Foster's "The Mauritanian" co-star Shailene Woodley. She might love Rodgers even more than Woodley, leading to that special call-out. And Rodgers did thank Jodie Foster in his MVP acceptance speech. "I decided, I am not only a huge Packers fan, but I’m a competitive MVP fan (for) Aaron Rodgers," joked Foster, who has long-proclaimed allegiance to the Wisconsin-based football team. Chadwick Boseman wins best actor Golden Globe and his widow accepts in an emotional speech. – The New York Times

Chadwick Boseman won his first Golden Globe, and it was for a film he never got to see. Boseman’s widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepted the award for best actor in a motion picture drama on behalf of the late actor, who died in August of colon cancer at age 43 — three months before “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was released. “He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you you can,” Simone Ledward said, as she and the audience wiped back tears. “That tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history.” Boseman is the first Black winner in the category in nearly 15 years. (Forest Whitaker won at the 2007 ceremony for his performance as Idi Amin ...

Sacha Baron Cohen Thanks “All-White” HFPA, Torches Rudy Giuliani In ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ Best Comedy Golden Globe Speech – Deadline

Sacha Baron Cohen came out hot at the start of his acceptance speech for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm‘s win at the Golden Globes for Best Comedy or Musical. “Thank you to the all-white Hollywood Foreign Press,” he began, a shot at the group’s lack of any Black members, a fact that has been excoriated in the industry and beyond in recent days. (Watch the full speech above.) He also saluted “co-star” Rudy Giuliani, without whom “this film could not have been possible.” The attorney for former president Donald Trump “came from nowhere and turned out to be a comedy genius.” (Giuliani famously put his hands in his pants in a hotel room during a scene with Maria Bakalova, who plays the 15-year-old daughter of Borat. He later said he was adjusting his microphone.) Related Story...

Golden Globes winners 2021: The full list – Vox.com

The winners of the 2021 Golden Globes were crowned on Sunday night, in a bicoastal and bizarrely produced ceremony hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. There were awkward Zoom moments aplenty. There were several uncomfortable but necessary mentions of the lack of diversity among this year’s nominees and within the notoriously corrupt organization that hands out the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. And in between, a variety of television shows and movies won new trophies! On the TV side, Netflix drama The Crown was the winningest show of the evening, taking home four statuettes, including Best TV Series – Drama. It was joined on the winners list by its Netflix sibling The Queen’s Gambit, which won Best Limited TV Series, as well as Best Actress in a TV Drama ...

Mexicos coronavirus czar in hospital with COVID-19, as death toll nears 186,000 – Yahoo News

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's coronavirus czar has been hospitalized over the past five days for COVID-19 treatment but is recovering well, a health official said on Sunday, as the country marks the one-year anniversary of its first confirmed infection. Hugo Lopez-Gatell, the face of Mexico's response to the pandemic, has drawn criticism for downplaying the need for masks and for spearheading a strategy of limited testing. Mexico has registered 185,715 fatalities from the coronavirus, giving it the world's fourth-highest death toll from the pandemic, according to a Reuters tally. Lopez-Gatell was admitted for "early hospitalization" last Wednesday after his medical team determined he required supplemental oxygen, said Ruy Lopez, head of the National Center of Preventative Programs and...
