Trapped in his own body by a cruel disease, Peter Scott-Morgan pushed science and doctors to limit – Daily Mail

Just for a moment, imagine that you were about to be diagnosed with a terminal disease — and you could choose which one to have. Without the slightest hesitation, I’d opt for motor neurone disease. It’s often described as the world’s cruellest disease, because it destroys all the nerve cells that control your movement. Most sufferers die when they can no longer swallow or breathe. But I’m serious — it really is the best terminal disease you can have. There’s no chronic pain, no nausea and you don’t usually lose your mind. After I was diagnosed with motor neurone disease [MND] myself in 2017, I was told that most sufferers died within two years. I refused, however, to accept my death sentence. (Peter 2.0. Amish community may have reached COVID herd immunity, health official says – New York Post

An Amish community in Pennsylvania may have become the first group in the US to achieve herd immunity, a local health official claims. The administrator of a medical center in the heart of Lancaster County’s New Holland Borough, which is known for its Amish and Mennonite communities, estimates that as many as 90 percent of the religious families have had at least one family member infected with the virus. “So, you would think if COVID was as contagious as they say, it would go through like a tsunami; and it did,” said Allen Hoover, an administrator of the Parochial Medical Center, which caters to the religious community and has 33,000 patients. The Amish and Mennonite groups initially complied with stay-at-home orders at the beginning of the pandemic — shu...

Scholastic pulls book by Captain Underpants author Dav Pilkey with harmful racial stereotypes – USA TODAY

Scholastic has pulled a book by "Captain Underpants" author Dav Pilkey that the publisher says "perpetuates passive racism."  "The Adventures of Ook and Gluk," published in 2010, served as a spinoff of sorts from his popular "Captain Underpants" children's series: The two main characters from "Underpants" are listed as the author and illustrator of the book, during which they sought to clear up "science facts" with a story about time-traveling cavemen who train at Master Wong's School of Kung-Fu. Pilkey said he created the book to "showcase diversity, equality and non-violent conflict resolution" using "principles found in Chinese philosophy" but had recently been alerted that it "also contains harmful racial stereotypes and passively racist imagery."  "I wanted to take this opportunity t...
