People who are fully vaccinated with the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer or Moderna are 90% less likely to get infected with COVID-19, according to a CDC study that tested nearly 4,000 health care workers and other essential workers for the virus weekly. Why it matters: The data show how well the vaccine performs in non-clinical trial settings. When Michiganders get a Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine paid for with certain federal funds, a new state law mandates that they must be informed that it was developed using a stem cell line from an aborted fetus. The requirement was tucked away inside a broader state bill that distributed federal COVID-19 funds. Although Congress approved billions of dollars for Michigan in December, it falls on the state Legislature to allocate the money.  Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Democrats wanted every available dollar immediately sent to families, workers and businesses in need. Republicans ultimately allocated some of the funds, but also tied more than $1 billion to separate bills that sought to take away power from Whitmer and the leader of the state health department. By Adam Martin Newly reported Covid-19 cases in the U.S. were down from a day earlier, following a surge in reported infections last week. The U.S. reported more than 43,000 new cases for Sunday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University and published early Monday morning, Eastern time. That number might update later in the morning. It was down from 62,062 a day earlier but up from 33,766 a week earlier. Cases have surged recently, with the U.S. reporting 86,947 on Wednesday and 77,339 on Friday. While down from January’s highs of around 300,000, cases have remained above 50,000 since March 22 and above 60,000 for the four days preceding Sunday, reversing a downward trend that had lasted since March 2.
