CDC report: 68% of people who exercised indoors at one Chicago gym contracted COVID-19 – WGN TV Chicago

(NEXSTAR) – A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that some indoor exercise facilities may have trouble preventing the spread of COVID-19 among exercisers. The report studied a single Chicago gym in August 2020 and found that out of 81 attendees of indoor high-intensity classes, 55 people fell sick with COVID-19 — or 68 percent. The report did not disclose the exercise facility’s name. Twenty-two of those infected attended classes on or after the day symptoms began, and most attendees (76 percent) wore masks infrequently, including persons with (84 percent) and without COVID-19 (60 percent). The gym appeared to be following most public health protocols. All classes were held at 25 percent capacity or less, and mask use, t...

SF Penalizes One Medical for Vaccinating Ineligible Patients – NBC Bay Area

San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) confirmed to the Investigative Unit Wednesday it has stopped allocating COVID-19 vaccines to One Medical, one of its main partners in the city’s vaccine rollout plan. One Medical is a membership-based healthcare practice – anyone can join. After partnering with SFDPH, it said it administered vaccines to its own eligible participants and members of the public who were referred by the county as a temporary One Medical member. Before receiving this information, the Investigative Unit received reports of people paying the standard $200 membership fee just to take advantage of One Medical’s easy-to-book vaccine appointment system. In some cases, the individuals said they did not live in San Francisco. Some said they already ...

Researchers find emerging COVID-19 strain in New York – New York Post

A new coronavirus strain that shares some characteristics with the South Africa variant is emerging in New York City, researchers said Wednesday. As of mid-February, the new variant, called B.1.526, was present in about 12 percent of coronavirus samples collected in the Big Apple and surrounding areas, according to researchers at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. In their analysis of publicly available databases, the Columbia researchers did not find a high prevalence of the South Africa or Brazil COVID-19 variants in the region. “Instead we found high numbers of this home-grown lineage,” Dr. Anne-Catrin Uhlemann, assistant professor in the division of infectious diseases at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surg...

California surpasses 50,000 COVID-19 deaths amid fears of new variants – Los Angeles Times

California has surpassed 50,000 COVID-19 deaths, a tally that came as Los Angeles County reported a backlog of more than 800 deaths over the autumn-and-winter surge. The count comes as daily coronavirus cases and COVID-19 deaths have dropped considerably in recent weeks, although some scientists remain concerned about the potential spread of mutant variants that are more contagious and possibly more lethal. While California has the largest number of COVID-19 deaths of any state in the nation, it ranks 32nd among the 50 states and the District of Columbia for COVID-19 deaths per capita. The backlog of 806 new COVID-19 deaths in L.A. County, which mostly occurred in December and January, was discovered following extensive checks of death records, Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said ...

“Ginny & Georgia” isnt “Gilmore Girls” redux – its darker, riskier and far more fun – Salon

Stars Hollow, like the family relationship around which it revolves, is a TV fantasy built on a foundation of spun sugar. This is precisely what the loyal "Gilmore Girls" audience loved about this little American paradise and adored about Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory. More than merely a mother and daughter who deeply loved one another, they were also best friends. Watch a few minutes of "Ginny and Georgia" and one can assume Ginny Miller (Antonia Gentry) takes issue with that portrayal of the mother-daughter bond despite the best efforts of her mother Georgia (Brianna Howey). We meet them at the moment that Georgia's husband dies suddenly. Shortly after the funeral she uproots Ginny and her half-brother Austin (Diesel La Torraca) from Houston, Texas and moves them abruptly to We...
