Evan Rachel Wood Accuses Marilyn Manson of Abuse – The New York Times

The actor and singer Evan Rachel Wood, who has spoken publicly for years about being a survivor of sexual and physical violence, said on Monday that she had been abused by the rock musician Marilyn Manson. “The name of my abuser is Brian Warner, also known to the world as Marilyn Manson,” Ms. Wood wrote in an Instagram post. “He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years. I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission. I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail. I am here to expose this dangerous man and call out the many industries that have enabled him, before he ruins any more lives. I stand with the many victims who will no longer be silent.” Ms. Wood, 33, was nominated for a Golden Globe for her portrayal of a volatile adole...

U.K. variant found in nine Georgia counties, state says – Atlanta Journal Constitution

After declining last week to release information about which cities or counties have had people infected, citing privacy laws, DPH reconsidered and provided The Atlanta Journal-Constitution with a list of counties. The AJC filed a request filed for the information under the state Open Records Act. The department said the U.K. variant has been detected in residents of Fulton, Gwinnett, Cobb, DeKalb, Paulding, Cherokee, Carroll, Douglas and Clayton counties. In a press release Monday, DPH said there are now 19 cases in Georgia — eight males and 11 females, ranging in age from 15 to 61.

Israel’s Leaders Clash with Ultraorthodox Over Covid-19 Lockdowns, Vaccines – The Wall Street Journal

BNEI BRAK, Israel—Israel’s attempt to suppress a roiling pandemic has collided with a hard-hit ultraorthodox community that has proven resistant to lockdowns and suspicious of the nation’s mass vaccination campaign. On Sunday, thousands of ultraorthodox mourners attended two funerals of famous rabbis who died from the coronavirus. The mourners flouted bans on public gatherings of no more than 10 people on the same day that Israel’s cabinet extended a strict lockdown that includes barring all international flights. Thousands of men dressed in black wool hats and suits crowded together, many without masks, images of the event show. Fearing violence, police steered away from arrests while some top Israeli politicians seethed. “This is how unequal enforcement ...

Censor review: eerie horror in an ‘80s moral panic – The Verge

Like most recent events, the 2021 edition of the Sundance Film Festival has shifted from an in-person showcase to a virtual one. Despite the change, we’ll still be bringing you reviews and insight on the most interesting experiences we find, from indie films to VR experiments. Censorship is the bane of artists, but it’s also a grudging compliment — because being a devoted censor requires believing that art has power. That belief is the dark heart of Censor, a horror film about the horror film world’s most infamous moral panic. Censor, which premieres at the Sundance Film Festival this week, is the feature debut from Welsh director Prano Bailey-Bond. It’s set in 1980s Britain during the height of the “video nasties” controversy, which saw dozens of films — some from now-iconic name...

Vaccine skepticism lurks in town famous for syphilis study – Associated Press

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (AP) — Lucenia Dunn spent the early days of the coronavirus pandemic encouraging people to wear masks and keep a safe distance from each other in Tuskegee, a mostly Black city where the government once used unsuspecting African American men as guinea pigs in a study of a sexually transmitted disease. Now, the onetime mayor of the town immortalized as the home of the infamous “Tuskegee syphilis study” is wary of getting inoculated against COVID-19. Among other things, she’s suspicious of the government promoting a vaccine that was developed in record time when it can’t seem to conduct adequate virus testing or consistently provide quality rural health care. “I’m not doing this vaccine right now. That doesn’t mean I’m never going to do it. But I know enough to withhold getti...

New diabetes cases linked to covid-19 – The Washington Post

Many of those patients had no prior history of diabetes. Some who developed elevated blood sugar while they had covid-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus, returned to normal by the time they left the hospital. Others went home with a diagnosis of full-blown diabetes. “We’ve definitely seen an uptick in patients who are newly diagnosed,” Zilbermint said. Although covid-19 often attacks the lungs, it is increasingly associated with a range of problems including blood clots, neurological disorders, and kidney and heart damage. Researchers say new-onset diabetes may soon be added to those complications — both Type 1, in which people cannot make the insulin needed to regulate their blood sugar, and Type 2, in which they make too little insulin or become resistant to their insulin,...
