Dolly Parton Turned Down The Medal Of Freedom From Donald Trump Twice. Heres Why. – HuffPost

Country music icon Dolly Parton has revealed why she twice turned down former President Donald Trump’s offer of the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In an interview with TODAY on Monday, the “Jolene” singer and lifelong philanthropist said it was just a case of bad timing — and also explained why she would now be hesitant to accept the accolade from President Joe Biden. “I couldn’t accept it (from Trump) because my husband was ill and then they asked me again about it and I wouldn’t travel because of the COVID,” she recalled. “So now I feel like if I take it, I’ll be doing politics, so I’m not sure,” Parton continued. “I don’t work for those awards. It’d be nice but I’m not sure that I even deserve it. But it’s a nice compliment for people to thi...

Alzheimer’s Prediction May Be Found in Writing Tests – The New York Times

Is it possible to predict who will develop Alzheimer’s disease simply by looking at writing patterns years before there are symptoms? According to a new study by IBM researchers, the answer is yes. And, they and others say that Alzheimer’s is just the beginning. People with a wide variety of neurological illnesses have distinctive language patterns that, investigators suspect, may serve as early warning signs of their diseases. For the Alzheimer’s study, the researchers looked at a group of 80 men and women in their 80s — half had Alzheimer’s and the others did not. But, seven and a half years earlier, all had been cognitively normal. The men and women were participants in the Framingham Heart Study, a long-running federal research effort that requires regular physical and cognitive test...

Calamari in Crisis

Even if you didn’t watch the 2020 Democratic National Convention last August, it was impossible to miss: the “calamari comeback” moment. During the televised event’s “roll call” of delegates from each state, viewers were presented with a Miss America–like montage, only instead of beauty queens, lawmakers were joined by or replaced with farmers, factory workers, students, activists—or, in the case of Rhode Island, a cook, clad in a black bistro shirt, a chef’s beanie, and a mask, silently brandishing a platter of battered and fried calamari adorned with pickled cherry peppers and grilled lemon wedges.   It was perhaps the most attention this country has ever paid to squid.  Six months later, it’s clear that calamari—as the cephalopods are known in ...

Hal Holbrook, Actor Who Channeled Mark Twain, Is Dead at 95 – The New York Times

Hal Holbrook, who carved out a substantial acting career in television and film but who achieved his widest acclaim onstage, embodying Mark Twain in all his craggy splendor and vinegary wit in a one-man show seen around the world, died on Jan. 23 at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 95. His death was confirmed by his assistant, Joyce Cohen, on Monday night. Mr. Holbrook had a long and fruitful run as an actor. He was the shadowy patriot Deep Throat in “All the President’s Men” (1976); an achingly grandfatherly character in “Into the Wild” (2007), for which he received an Oscar nomination; and the influential Republican Preston Blair in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” (2012). He played the 16th president himself, on television, in Carl Sandburg’s “Lincoln,” a 1974 mini-series. The per...
