Coronavirus strain in UK picks up mutation that could impact vaccines, experts say – KSL.com

ATLANTA (CNN) — A mutation that could allow COVID-19 to escape antibody protection has now been found in samples of a rapidly spreading strain in the U.K., according to a report Monday by Public Health England. The mutation, called E484K, was already part of the genetic signature of variants linked to South Africa and Brazil. According to the PHE report, the mutation has been newly detected in at least 11 samples of the U.K.'s B.1.1.7 strain. It also appears some of these samples may have acquired this mutation independently, instead of spreading from a single case. This could mean a variant already known to be more transmissible also risks becoming somewhat resistant to the immune protection offered by vaccines, or more likely to cause reinfection among people who were previously infecte...

Netflix is SLAMMED for casting Carey Mulligan, 35, as a 56-year-old in The Dig – Daily Mail

Netflix has been met with criticism for casting lead actress Carey Mulligan as a woman in her 50s in new film The Dig.  The screen star, 35, plays 56-year-old landowner Edith Pretty - a role originally intended for Nicole Kidman, 53 - in the movie, which is based on John Preston's 2007 novel about the unearthing of the Anglo-Saxon ship burial at Sutton Hoo in 1939.  Viewers took to Twitter to question the network's decision as one asked: 'Wasn't there an actor of the correct age?', while another claimed 'women over 40 are still invisible in the culture'. Director Simon Stone has previously defended the thespian's portrayal, stating: 'The novel departs from the truth in a lot of aspects and doesn't purport to be absolutely accurate, so the scope for departing from historical accuracy was a...

Dustin Diamond’s sudden death has left ‘Saved by the Bell’ cast ‘shocked,’ Mark-Paul Gosselaar says – Fox News

The news of Dustin Diamond’s death has sent shockwaves around the entertainment industry — and the cast of "Saved by the Bell" is still reeling from it, according to Mark-Paul Gosselaar. Appearing on Tamron Hall’s self-titled talk show, Gosselaar spoke on his late co-star’s death and noted that "it’s always tough" when someone close passes away. "I think it's even more so when the individual is someone you know and the age of Dustin -- it was only a few weeks ago that we heard about his diagnosis and for it to happen so quickly is shocking," Gosselaar said on the show.  "Myself and the rest of the cast, we will get together at some point and sort of express our feelings, but yeah, it happened so quickly that we're all just pretty shocked about it," the actor, 46, explained.  'SAVED B...

Alameda County identifies Bay Areas first cases of new U.K. coronavirus variant – San Francisco Chronicle

Alameda County reported on Tuesday six confirmed or suspected cases of a new, highly infectious variant of the coronavirus that was discovered in the United Kingdom. The cases are the first of this variant tied to a specific Bay Area county. Stanford scientists had identified a handful of cases in the region last week, but declined to say what counties they were from. The variant, known as B.1.1.7, has been identified in other parts of the state, mostly in Southern California, and 127 cases have been reported in California as of Monday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nationwide, 541 cases of the variant have been reported in 33 states. But public health officials say the variant likely is much more widespread and has n...

Oregon blocks public access to vaccine equity group’s meeting – OregonLive

Oregon’s coronavirus vaccine equity group will meet in secret today to evaluate the group’s work over the last month after the state shut down public access following weeks’ of open meetings. Oregon’s Vaccine Advisory Committee was charged with recommending who should be vaccinated after the governor’s priority groups, with an emphasis on tackling health disparities that stem from “structural racism.” But the group’s final recommendations last week appeared rushed and some committee members expressed frustration with the process. A spokesman for the health authority defended the decision to prohibit media or members of the public from viewing today’s 5:30 p.m. meeting, saying the group accomplished its original function at its Thursday session. The committee “has completed its offic...
