Thousands of seniors vaccinations delayed due to lack of doses, mishaps – SF Gate

When South Bay resident Arjun Batra, 74, heard California Gov. Gavin Newsom's announcement in mid-January that individuals age 65 and over were eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, he called his health care provider, Kaiser Permanente, in hopes of making an inoculation appointment. After waiting three hours on hold, Batra said he finally spoke with a Kaiser representative who asked him a "standard set of questions." "Based on those answers, the next thing was if there was an appointment available," he said. "She said there are no appointments available for within the timeframe in which appointments were being given.” He called the following week. Same thing. Three hours on hold, same questions, and again no appointments. ...

Upgrade Your Face Mask: 5 Ways To Filter Out More Particles : Shots – Health News – NPR

It's time to up your mask game. With new, more contagious strains of the coronavirus spreading in the U.S., and transmission levels still very high in many places, some public health experts recommend that Americans upgrade from the basic cloth masks that many have been wearing during the pandemic. "A cloth mask might be 50% effective at blocking viruses and aerosols," says Linsey Marr, a researcher at Virginia Tech who studies airborne virus transmission. "We're at the point now ... that we need better than 50%." When you're outdoors, where fresh air can quickly disperse virus droplets and smaller particles, a cloth mask is still fine, Marr says. But infectious particles can accumulate indoors, and that's when you want a better mask. "I am now wearing my best mask to ...

AMA2020 via Getty ImagesYou might have seen The Weeknd’s altered face on the internet lately – either bloodied and covered in bandages or transformed by faux plastic surgery. With the 30-year-old singer set to perform at the Super Bowl LV halftime show on Feb. 7, it’ll be interesting to see whether he continues the act before hundreds of millions of viewers. The changes to The Weeknd’s face didn’t simply appear overnight. Rather, they surfaced as a slow crescendo, as notes in a larger arrangement. Initially, there were facial bruises at the end of his “Blinding Lights” music video, in which an all-night bender ends in a car accident. He sported a bandaged nose for performances on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in Janu...

Mank leads Golden Globe nominees with 6; Netflix dominates – The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — After a year where the pandemic nearly emptied movie theaters, Netflix dominated nominations to the 78ths Golden Globe Awards on Wednesday, with David Fincher’s “Mank” leading film nominees with six nods and “The Crown” topping all television series. The Globes, delayed about two months due to the coronavirus, tried to muster some of the awards’ usual buzz on Wednesday in a largely virtual awards season bereft the kind of red-carpet glamour the Globes annual feast on. And perhaps to account for the otherwise lack of it, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association heaped nominations on two lavish period pieces of high royalty — both the Hollywood variety (“Mank” dramatizes the making of “Citizen Kane”) and the British kind. “Mank,” about “Citizen Kane” co-writer Herman Mankiew...

Plant-based antiviral drug may help beat COVID-19, research shows – New York Post

A plant-derived antiviral medication may be “highly effective” in treating the coronavirus — and could also help fight future pandemics, according to new research in the UK. Researchers at the University of Nottingham found that the broad spectrum antiviral thapsigargin is not only very effective against COVID-19, but also against a common cold coronavirus called respiratory syncytial virus and the influenza A, Eurekalert.org reported. “Whilst we are still at the early stages of research into this antiviral and its impact on how viruses such as COVID-19 can be treated, these findings are hugely significant,” said Professor Kin-Chow Chang, who led the study along with colleagues at the Animal and Plant Health Agency, China Agricultural University and the Pirbrig...
