Singer Engelbert Humperdinck is mourning his wife of 56 years, Patricia Healey, who died Thursday at age 85 after contracting COVID-19.  Humperdinck, 84, announced in a social media post shared Friday that his family was "heartbroken over the loss of my darling wife," who died the night before, "surrounded by our children, Louise, Jason, Brad, with Scott on FaceTime." "Her earthly limitations no longer hold her down as she is freely running the glorious gardens of Heaven, reunited with so many loved ones," Humperdinck wrote. "We prayed as a family, blessed her with the water from Lourdes and off she went ... ushered into the arms of Jesus with help from the generous heart filled prayers from all around the world." Diplo Headlines Super Bowl Super-Spreader Party in Tampa – TMZ

Play video content Exclusive TMZ.com Diplo can sure draw a crowd, because around 2,000 people swarmed the Godfrey Waterfront Hotel's WTR Tampa Pool Saturday night and -- aside from the whole COVID super-spreader thing that sometimes causes death -- a good time was had by all. It looks very pre-pandemic, with music, a dance floor, bars, and fun shenanigans. And, as per usual, no social distancing and masks are few and far between. The electronic music and light show are pretty spectacular, as fire dancers do their thing. On a serious note, this is what is keeping D...

Statistics show thousands of Minnesotans will die after getting the COVID vaccine — but not because of it – TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

This week, some 35,000 Minnesotans 65 and older will receive a dose of the coronavirus vaccine. About 100 will likely be dead within a month, statistics suggest. But not because of the vaccine. Because people die, especially older people. There are still cancers, heart attacks and a myriad of other potential causes. The challenge for public health officials is to avoid even a few of those inevitable deaths being seized upon as evidence that the COVID-19 vaccines are dangerous, or even killers. There is no evidence at this point that either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccines — the two that have been injected into the arms of millions of Americans — carry any hazards, except occasional allergic reactions that can be countered by common medicines on hand at vaccination sites....

For Her SNL Debut, Phoebe Bridgers Goes Bigger Than Ever – NPR

YouTube Most of us spent 2020 in a holding pattern — if we're lucky — but Phoebe Bridgers had a massive year. Her second album, Punisher, was one of 2020's best-loved records, and she's started 2021 with four Grammy nominations and a new wave of high-profile TV appearances. Still, Bridgers' Saturday Night Live debut — in an episode hosted by Schitt's Creek star Dan Levy, who called her "amazing" in his intro — marked another milestone for the young singer. Punisher leans heavily on murmured atmospherics, making it ideal for late-night headphone listening. But on SNL, Bridgers located its loudest moments and cranked them louder than they've ...

What you need to know about the new COVID-19 variants – Al Jazeera English

At about the same time the first vaccines against COVID-19 were being approved and acquired in December 2020, health officials in the United Kingdom announced the discovery of a new strain of the virus. Initial reports based on limited early evidence suggested that it could be more infectious. A few days later, the discovery of another variant of the coronavirus was announced in South Africa, which at the time was recording more than 15,000 cases of COVID-19 infections daily, the highest number in Africa. And in January another variant was detected in Brazil, originating in the northern state of Amazonas. According to Dr Deepti Gurdasani, a clinical epidemiologist and senior lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, a variant called D641G developed in February-March last year in ...

As Vaccines Raise Hope, Cold Reality Dawns: Covid-19 Is Likely Here to Stay – The Wall Street Journal

Vaccination drives hold out the promise of curbing Covid-19, but governments and businesses are increasingly accepting what epidemiologists have long warned: The pathogen will circulate for years, or even decades, leaving society to coexist with Covid-19 much as it does with other endemic diseases like flu, measles, and HIV. The ease with which the coronavirus spreads, the emergence of new strains and poor access to vaccines in large parts of the world mean Covid-19 could shift from a pandemic disease to an endemic one, implying lasting modifications to personal and societal behavior, epidemiologists say. “Going through the five phases of grief, we need to come to the acceptance phase that our lives are not going to be the same,” said Thomas Frieden, forme...
