HFPA Ex-President Says Org Hasnt Had a Black Member for 20 Years – Variety

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. is gearing up for its annual Golden Globes this Sunday and responding to criticism for failing to cultivate an inclusive and diverse membership body. The group doesn’t currently have any Black journalists among its 87-person membership. In fact, the organization hadn’t had a Black member since at least 2002, when former HFPA president and board chair Meher Tatna joined. In an interview for Variety‘s talk with the heads of the big four awards bodies — Oscars, Globes, SAG and BAFTA — Tatna addressed the criticism. “As a person of color, it’s important to me,” says Tatna. “It’s just there are nuances, as an organization of immigrants, who write for our home country, that search [for international Black journalists] has not been easy, but that doesn...

Above, vials of the Pfizer/BioNTech covid-19 vaccinePhoto: Patrick T. Fallon (Getty Images) More Americans are willing to get a covid-19 vaccine, new polling suggests. According to a survey run by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Americans are more likely to have been vaccinated or to want vaccination in February than they were a month ago, while the percentage of people who want to wait and see has declined as well. The KFF’s COVID-19 Vaccine Monitor has been tracking people’s enthusiasm for a covid-19 vaccine since last December, via a nationally representative survey conducted by phone. This last poll involved over 1,800 adults interviewed between February 15-23, 2021. Coronavirus pandemic: Los Angeles County sees uptick in MIS-C cases, even as COVID hospitalizations decline – KABC-TV

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Amid a decline in coronavirus hospitalizations in Los Angeles County, health officials are turning their attention to how COVID-19 is affecting children. As schools move closer to reopening for in-person instruction, there are now 100 cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome, a serious condition linked to coronavirus. That number marks a 77% increase in MIS-C cases over the past month. Officials suspect it is connected to a surge prompted by holiday activity. Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner said campuses could reopen by April 9, depending on vaccine availability. Starting Monday, California will allocate about 10% of first doses of COVID-19 vaccines to teachers and support staff, officials said. MORE: Simi Valley teen dies of MIS-...

This isn’t Netflix’s first time working with Production I.G. This TikTok Tom Cruise impersonator is using deepfake tech to impressive ends – The Verge

What’s better than an ultra-high-tech, Mission: Impossible-style mask? The deepfake technology this TikToker is using to impersonate Tom Cruise, apparently (via The Daily Beast). The deeptomcruise account appears to feature someone who’s pretending to be the famous actor, and the impression isn’t just jaw-dropping because of how well the person replicates Cruise’s famous laugh. How can you tell it’s not actually Tom Cruise using some sort of strange Twitter name? First, his voice is close, but it’s not quite there, especially since the lip-syncing is a tiny bit off at some points. You can hear what the real Cruise sounds like in this video (unless, of course, James Corden also deepfaked him in). Second, while the tracking and lighting on the face are darn near immaculate — espe...
