Ford making N95 masks with clear panels to help the deaf and ease communication – CBS News

Ford is using its engineering prowess to solve a thorny coronavirus problem: Designing a medical-grade face mask that reveals wearers' facial expressions and also allows hearing-impaired people to read lips. The automaker, which began producing personal protective equipment early on in the coronavirus pandemic, has developed a face mask with clear panels that also filters most airborne particles. "In those early days, everyone was learning what it was like to live in a masked environment. We quickly identified that while it's difficult for everybody to wear a mask all day long, for folks suffering from hearing impairment, it's an even bigger challenge," Jim Baumbick, the leader of Ford's PPE manufacturing effort, told CBS MoneyWatch. "That inspired us to think about how we could he...

Netflix acquired Redwall in its quest to beat Disney at animation – Quartz

On a video earnings call last month, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings sat on his couch, arms crossed, and casually mentioned that, oh, by the way, among the company’s many ambitions, he also wants to dethrone Disney from its spot as the longtime global leader in animation. “We’re very fired up about catching them in family animation,” Hastings said. “Maybe eventually passing them. We’ll see.” Netflix announced today its biggest move yet toward that dream of beating Disney at what it does best. The company acquired the rights to all 22 books of Redwall, the award-winning children’s fantasy series by English writer Brian Jacques about the adventures of a group of anthropomorphic animals. Don’t schedule mammogram near COVID-19 vaccine, doctors warn – Fox News

Women who recently received the COVID-19 vaccine may need to postpone their annual mammogram if they are due for one soon, say doctors in Utah.  Some women who receive the coronavirus vaccine may experience axillary adenopathy, also known as swollen lymph nodes, following vaccination. A doctor in Ohio recently warned that this reaction could be confused for a sign of breast cancer, as many patients are finding swollen lymph nodes under the same arm that they received the jab.  Some women who receive the coronavirus vaccine may experience axillary adenopathy, also known as swollen lymph nodes, following vaccination. South African COVID-19 variant found in California, Gov. Newsom says – KCRA Sacramento

Two cases of a COVID-19 variant first discovered in South Africa have been detected in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Wednesday. The cases were detected in Alameda and Santa Clara counties, Newsom said while speaking in Fresno County. "The issue of mutations is top of mind," Newsom said from the site of The Big Fresno Fair. Over the weekend, health officials in South Africa announced a temporary hold on the rollout of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine after a study suggested it offered "minimal protection" against mild-to-moderate COVID-19 due to the variant, the University of Oxford said. That yet-unpublished study included a relatively small number of people who were young and healthy on the whole. It was not able to measure how effective the vaccine was against severe disease...

Louisiana woman offered free plastic surgery after using Gorilla glue as hair spray – WDSU New Orleans

Tessica Brown was headed for a night out last month when she ran out of hair spray. "I went running around the house. I looked at the top of the refrigerator and there was the gorilla spray," Brown said. She used the spray version of Gorilla Glue on her hair to hold it in place for the night. "I figured by the time I come back home I could just wash it out. But when I got back, it didn't wash out," she said. Brown says nearly a week went by before she told her mother what happened. "We started trying all kind of different olive oils. I even put cooking oil. I didn't move. That was the only reason I went to social media. I figured someone out there could help."She never imagined what happened next. The video went viral overnight. Brown didn't get the help she was looking for, but a fl...
