A doctor at Brigham and Women’s is calling for improving the measures used to combat the spread of COVID-19 —  including masking, testing, and quarantining — after the first case of a variant strain of the virus was detected in Massachusetts.  The first case of the coronavirus variant cluster B.1.1.7, which was initially detected in the United Kingdom, is in a Boston woman who tested positive for COVID-19 in early January. The woman, who is in her early 20s, had traveled to the U.K. but tested negative before her return to the United States. She became ill the day after she arrived in Boston.   While the variant of the virus isn’t known to cause more severe illness, it is believed to be more contagious. The Douglas County Health Department has launched a website for people 65 and older who want to know when the COVID-19 vaccine is available for them. Those in that group should visit the DCHD website and search for the button on the home page that says “COVID-19 Vaccine Sign-Up List.”"A soft launch over the weekend saw nearly 1,900 find the site and add their names. Those individuals do not need to sign up again," the release says. "Putting your name on the list only confirms you will be informed when the vaccine becomes available. It is not an appointment for a vaccination."Phase 1-A of the vaccine rollout is expected to be through by the end of January. Jennifer Lopez nervous about performing at Biden-Harris inauguration, fiance Alex Rodriguez claims – Fox News

She sure knows how to command an audience's attention, but Jennifer Lopez is apparently feeling a bit nervous about performing at Joe Biden's upcoming presidential inauguration ceremony. The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) announced last week that Lopez, 51, is included on the roster of musical artists for Wednesday's inauguration ceremony of Biden and Kamala Harris at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Despite her mega performance at last year's Super Bowl LIV as a halftime performer, Lopez's fiance, Alex Rodriguez, suggested she knows the inauguration presents a big responsibility. "To think in the span of 12 months she's done the Super Bowl, New Year's, and now the inaugural. It's unbelievable!" Rodriguez said during his Monday appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fal...

Most Americans say the coronavirus pandemic is out of control, Post-ABC poll finds – The Washington Post

About 1 in 5 Republicans say they think the pandemic is at least mostly under control, with fewer than 1 in 20 regarding it as completely controlled, the survey finds. Democrats are more than twice as likely as those identifying with the GOP to say they perceive the virus as not at all under control. Overall, the survey also shows interest among a majority of Americans in getting a coronavirus inoculation now that the government is allowing two manufacturers’ vaccines for emergency use. Forty percent say they definitely will get a shot once it becomes available to them and another 23 percent say they probably will. Still, partisan differences exist on vaccine attitudes, too, with about half of Democrats saying they definitely will get vaccinated, compared with about one-quarter of Repub...

U.S. expected to have 500,000 COVID-19 deaths by February, CDC official warns – CBS News

California leads the world in coronavirus cases, with over 3 million residents infected. UCLA epidemiologist Dr. Anne Rimoin told CBS News that she "certainly" suspects there are more variants active in the population. She likened searching for the variants to "shining a flashlight in the dark," adding, "You're going to see something if you start to look, and we just haven't been looking." ...
