The COVID Vaccine May Not Protect You From This, Study Says – Yahoo Lifestyle

The international medical community has heralded the development and release of effective vaccines as one of the most significant milestones in the coronavirus pandemic, creating optimism that an end is in sight for the worst days of the disease. But it wasn't long after inoculations began to roll out that variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus were discovered around the world that made it more contagious than the previous dominant strain—as well as raised questions on how the mutations might affect how well the vaccines work. Now, a new study has suggested that the COVID vaccine or the natural immunity in patients who have already recovered from the disease may not protect against being infected by the new strain of the virus. Read on to see what researchers says could be putting you at risk, ...

New CDC director takes over beleaguered agency amid crisis – Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — As the coronavirus swept across the globe last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sank into the shadows, undermined by some of its own mistakes and stifled by an administration bent on downplaying the nation’s suffering. Now a new CDC director is arriving to a mammoth task: reasserting the agency while the pandemic is in its deadliest phase yet and the nation’s largest-ever vaccination campaign is wracked by confusion and delays. “I don’t know if the CDC is broken or just temporarily injured,” but something must be done to bring it back to health, said Timothy Westmoreland, a Georgetown University law professor focused on public health. The task falls to Dr. Rochelle Walensky, 51, an infectious-diseases specialist at Harvard Medical School and Massachuse...

The Benefits of Moderate Exercise – The New York Times

The other men began a typical moderate-exercise program, riding bikes at the lab five times a week at a pace they could comfortably sustain for 30 to 40 minutes. Over the course of the next six weeks, the HIIT group pedaled intensely for a grand total of less than an hour, while the moderate-intensity group worked out for at least 2.5 hours each week for the same period. At the end of the six weeks, both groups returned to the lab for re-testing, after which the scientists combed through their results for disparities. They found plenty. The men almost all were fitter, and to about the same extent, however they had exercised. But only those in the moderate-exercise group had shed much body fat, improved their blood pressures or become better able to metabolize the extra fat from the unctuo...

Nearly 12K doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine ruined en route to Michigan, state officials say – WDIV ClickOnDetroit

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan officials said 11,900 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine the state was receiving are ruined and unusable. “That frustrates me when I know we are in a race and every vaccine matters, but that is not something I can control. It’s not Michigan’s fault,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Twenty-one shipments of the Moderna vaccine were rendered unusable because of temperature issues with the distributor. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the vaccine must be stored in a freezer between minus 13 degrees and 5 degrees Fahrenheit. The distributor, McKesson Corporation, told the state the temperature went out of range and got too cold, affecting nearly 12-thousand doses. Plan to vaccinate 2,000 seniors a day on pause in Stanislaus County – KCRA Sacramento

Vaccination clinics that were set to administer doses to 2,000 seniors a day in Stanislaus County are now being put on hold following a batch of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine where allergic reactions are being reported. On Tuesday, what was anticipated to be long lines of people were instead empty rows and locked gates. The sight of the closed clinic left one man on a mission seeking answers. Lorenzo Gonzales visited the Modesto Centre Plaza in the hopes of getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Instead, he was met with “vaccination site closed” signs. "First thing that went through my mind I'm going, 'Oh, boy. Another problem with getting it distributed,’” Gonzales said. That problem is statewide, after a San Diego clinic reported that fewer than 10 people had severe allergic reactions to Mod...
