Allergic reactions to COVID-19 vaccine – KRON4

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released data on allergic reactions to COVID-19 vaccines. Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that has occurred for some people after receiving the first dose of both the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines. The CDC says the allergic reaction occurs rarely after vaccination. Twenty-one cases of Anaphylaxis were detected from Dec. 14 through Dec. 23, 2020 by the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System of a reported 1,893,360 first doses of the Pfizer vaccine — that’s 11.1 cases per million doses. And 71% cases occurred within 15 minutes of receiving the vaccination. For the Moderna vaccine, the same system detected 10 cases of Anaphylaxis after administe...

A Course Correction for American Chinese Food

Back in December, I caught up with chef, activist, and entrepreneur Lucas Sin on Zoom. At the time, he was at the Midtown Manhattan location of Junzi Kitchen, his quickly expanding fast-casual Chinese restaurant chain, as he and his team were furiously making a batch of chile oil to fulfill online orders. “It’s all hands on deck,” he said through his N95 mask. “We have hundreds and hundreds of bottles to ship in the next few days.” A booming chile oil business is just one of the many facets of Sin’s game, which is shaped by a Hong Kong upbringing, US education, and a deep love for culinary history, both past (cooking dinners in tribute to historical Chinatown restaurants, like Mon Lay Won the “Chinese Delomico” operating in early 1900s NYC) and mod...

Bridgerton fans spot modern-day blunder in opening moments of hit Netflix period drama – USA TODAY

Eagle-eyed fans have spotted a modern-day blunder in the opening moments of the runaway hit Netflix period drama "Bridgerton." The torrid romance, based on the first of eight novels by Julia Quinn, has proved a must-watch escape for many since its Christmas debut, and has been renewed for a second Netflix season.  While the tale of sex and scandal is set in Regency era London, early 19th century, a painted yellow traffic line was clear on the road used, for dramatic purposes, by horse-drawn carriages. Just as fans noticed the Starbucks cup and then the water bottle in the finale of "Game of Thrones," "Bridgerton" fans drew the line at this error (it is around the 3:19 mark in the episode). "Given that characters were still travelling around by horse-drawn carriage, there’s no way that the...

COVID-19: Wearing Two Masks Better Than One, Creates Obstacle Course For Virus, CDC Says – Mount Kisco Daily Voice

Face masks help prevent the spread of COVID-19, but you could be getting more protection out of them by wearing two. Research shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC) recently noted the increased effectiveness of multi-layered masks or wearing two masks compared to a single-layer or just one mask. Multi-layer cloth masks can block up to 50-70 percent of fine droplets and particles and limit the forward spread of those captured. The message is pressing in the United States where more than 400,000 people have died due to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. This is the most deaths from COVID-19 reported by any country. The closest any other country has come to the U.S. fatality toll is Brazil, where more than 211,000 people ha...

In ambulances, an unseen, unwelcome passenger: COVID-19 – Yahoo Lifestyle

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It's crowded in the back of the ambulance. Two emergency medical technicians, the patient, the gurney — and an unseen and unwelcome passenger lurking in the air. For EMTs Thomas Hoang and Joshua Hammond, the coronavirus is constantly close. COVID-19 has become their biggest fear during 24-hour shifts in California's Orange County, riding with them from 911 call to 911 call, from patient to patient. They and other EMTs, paramedics and 911 dispatchers in Southern California have been thrust into the front lines of the national epicenter of the pandemic. They are scrambling to help those in need as hospitals burst with a surge of patients after the holidays, ambulances are stuck waiting outside hospitals for hours until beds become available, oxygen tanks are in alarmingl...
