New drug may be potent against the coronavirus | TheHill – The Hill

The chemical compound plitidepsin (trademarked name Aplidin) was first extracted from a sea organism known as Aplidium albicans, commonly known as sea squirts. Researchers recently published in Science the results of preclinical experiments involving using plitidepsin to treat human and mouse cells infected with SARS-CoV-2. They found evidence that suggests it’s possible this drug can be used as a therapy for COVID-19. The drug has been used in the past and was approved in Australia as a treatment for a type of cancer called multiple myeloma. But because there are so many potential drug compounds that exist, researchers can screen them for other uses and in this case for the coronavirus. “The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has created an immediate need for antiviral therapeutics that ca...

The U.S. Still Has a Big STI Problem – Gizmodo

Photo: Scott Olson (Getty Images) Sexually transmitted infections continue to be a major headache for Americans and their wallets, according to a new report released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About one in five Americans in the U.S. were thought to carry an STI in 2018, while there were 26 million new cases estimated that same year. These new cases also racked up billions in direct medical costs. In recent years, there has been a steady annual increase of reported STIs in the U.S. In 2018, there were nearly 2.5 million confirmed cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis—the highest combined number of all three ever reported in a year. Most STIs tend to go unreported, though, often because they don’t cause any visible symptoms at first or because peo...

New Playbook for Covid-19 Protection Emerges After Year of Study, Missteps – The Wall Street Journal

Scientists are settling on a road map that can help critical sectors of the economy safely conduct business, from meatpacking plants to financial services, despite the pandemic’s continued spread. After nearly a year of study, the lessons include: Mask-wearing, worker pods and good air flow are much more important than surface cleaning, temperature checks and plexiglass barriers in places like offices and restaurants. And more public-health experts now advocate wide use of cheap, rapid tests to detect cases quickly, in part because many scientists now think more than 50% of infections are transmitted by people without symptoms. The playbook comes after months of investigations on how the coronavirus spreads and affects the body. Scientists combined that wi...

Changes to tongue, hands or feet may flag coronavirus, study shows – The Straits Times

MADRID (AFP) - Changes to the tongue, the hands or the soles of the feet could give an early indication of Covid-19 infection, Spanish researchers found in a study presented on Tuesday (Jan 26). The conclusions emerged from research carried out among 666 patients with Covid-19 at Madrid's IFEMA field hospital set up during the first wave of the pandemic, the regional government said. One in four patients said they had noticed changes to their tongue, while four out of 10 spotted unusual signs on the palms of their hands or soles of their feet. The study was carried out in April by healthcare professionals from Madrid's La Paz hospital and primary care services, with the findings published in the British Journal of Dermatology in the form of a "research letter" in September. ...
