Syfys charming “Resident Alien” lets its star(man) shine, despite muddled metaphorical aspirations – Salon

No character actor does awkward like Alan Tudyk, the man who gave "Firefly" its goofy soul and stole "Rogue One" out from under nearly everyone else in the cast despite never appearing onscreen in his own flesh. Syfy's "Resident Alien," based on a comic book series, splits the difference by casting Tudyk as an extraterrestrial stranded on our planet after his malicious mission goes awry. Here, Tudyk is a being who goes by the highly unusual name Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle and forces the citizens of Patience, Colorado to live up to the town's name in virtually every interaction with him. The remoteness of the place and its need for a new town doctor pretty much forces them to after their longtime physician turns up dead. In the way of all out-of-the-way places where the odds are good and the...

Seniors are frustrated by inability to sign up for coronavirus vaccinations – The Boston Globe

With online registrations largely available only through individual providers, some seniors and their loved ones raced to sign up for openings that begin Monday. They refreshed Web pages, tested every link, and waited for hours, often to no avail. They described outdated information pages and glitchy websites that put them on hold for a half-hour or more, only to say that no time slots were open. Governor Charlie Baker urged patience Wednesday, saying appointments will become available as vaccine supply arrives. He said people should keep checking for openings and encouraged relatives and friends to assist seniors who might need help with the online process. “It’s going to require a certain amount of patience for people to understand that it may take several trips to the website before t...

States lift restrictions gradually amid fears of new variant – The Associated Press

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — States are loosening their coronavirus restrictions on restaurants and other businesses because of improved infection and hospitalization numbers but are moving gradually and cautiously, in part because of the more contagious variant taking hold in the U.S. While the easing could cause case rates to rise, health experts say it can work if done in a measured way and if the public remains vigilant about masks and social distancing. “If the frequency goes up, you tighten it up. If the frequency goes down, you loosen up. Getting it just right is almost impossible,” said Dr. Arnold Monto, a public health professor at the University of Michigan. “There’s no perfect way to do this.” As Michigan’s coronavirus rate dropped to the nation’s fifth-lowest over the last two weeks...
