Cicely Tyson death: Groundbreaking Emmy-winning actress, dies aged 96 – The Independent

Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor Cicely Tyson has died, according to a statement from her manager, Larry Thompson. She was 96. “I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing,” Thompson said. “Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Today she placed the last ornament, a Star, on top of the tree.” A star in theater, television, and film, Tyson famously resisted the sort of Blaxploitation roles Hollywood tried to force many actors of color into in the 1970s.  She rose to prominence in the 1961 Off Broadway production of Jean Genet's The Blacks. Many years later, she won a Tony for her role in a revival of The Trip to Bountiful. She was also known for p...

All It Took Was GameStop Imploding Wall Street to Get Jon Stewart on Twitter – Vulture

Jon Stewart, looking at his new Twitter feed. Photo: CBS via Getty Images Well, would you look at that? All it took was a few Redditors intentionally driving up the price GameStop stock, causing a few billions of dollars of losses for hedge funds who bet big money on that stock losing value, leading to trading apps like RobinHood to try and prevent citizens from participating in the free market to get Jon Stewart on Twitter. On Thursday, January 29, the former Daily Show host fired out his first ever tweet in support of the ragtag gang of Redditors who through the power of collective action have caused a “meme stock” bubble which as of yet has yet to burst. “This...

Pregnant women warned on vaccine – The Standard

Vials with a sticker reading, "COVID-19 / Coronavirus vaccine / Injection only" and a medical syringe are seen in front of a displayed Moderna logo in this illustration taken October 31, 2020. [Dado Ruvi, Reuters] The World Health Organisation (WHO) said clinical trials on the possible effects of vaccine on pregnant women are are yet to be carried out. “While pregnancy puts women at a higher risk of severe Covid-19, use of this vaccine in pregnant women is currently not recommended, unless they are at a high risk, such as health workers,” WHO said. Early this month, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said limited data was available on the safety of vaccines, including mRNA, given during pregnancy and called for more clinical trials and studies. “Limited data is curren...

Jon Stewart joins Twitter to defend Reddit GameStop traders – New York Post

Jon Stewart was prompted to join Twitter on Thursday to defend the renegade Reddit traders who turned Wall Street upside down this week. The former “Daily Show” host hit back at critics of the rogue day traders who used WallStreetBets to send GameStop’s stock skyrocketing in defiance of large hedge funds shorting the business. “This is bullsh-t. The Redditors aren’t cheating, they’re joining a party Wall Street insiders have been enjoying for years,” Stewart tweeted. “Don’t shut them down…maybe sue them for copyright infringement instead!!” He added: “We’ve learned nothing from 2008.” The comedian signed his first tweet “StewBeef.” His account @jon_actual quickly became verified and was granted a blue check. “The Late Show” host Stephen Colb...

Summer of Soul: Film Review | Sundance 2021 – Hollywood Reporter

In his directing debut, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson delves into forgotten footage from a 1969 Harlem concert series that showcased a who's who of Black acts. Not many people know his name, but half a century ago Tony Lawrence created something extraordinary in the middle of New York City. And few people know the name Hal Tulchin, but he documented the feat. It was called the Harlem Cultural Festival, and over six weekends in the summer of 1969 it showcased more than five dozen acts and drew 300,000 people, who were charged not a cent to see — are you ready? — Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln, B.B. King, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Staple Singers, Sly and the Family Stone. To name just a few of the artists, some in their prime and some groundbreaking up-a...

Pregnant Women Get Conflicting Advice on Covid-19 Vaccines – The New York Times

Pregnant women looking for guidance on Covid-19 vaccines are facing the kind of confusion that has dogged the pandemic from the start: The world’s leading public health organizations — the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization — are offering contradictory advice. Neither organization explicitly forbids or encourages immunizing pregnant women. But weighing the same limited studies, they provide different recommendations. The C.D.C.’s advisory committee urged pregnant women to consult with their doctors before rolling up their sleeves — a decision applauded by several women’s health organizations because it kept decision making in the hands of the expectant mothers. The W.H.O. recommended that pregnant women not receive the vaccine, unless they ...

What to know about layering up with double masks to avoid COVID-19 – WTOP

You might start seeing more people wear double masks, and the philosophy behind that is that layers provide greater filtration and better protection, according to a Maryland infectious disease expert. You might start seeing more people wear double masks, and the philosophy behind that is that layers provide greater filtration and better protection, according to a Maryland infectious disease expert. “Additional layers provide additional filtration, and therefore protection to the mask wearer,” said Dr. Gregory Schrank, an infectious disease physician and associate epidemiologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center. “From these masks, whether it be multilayer, multilayer with a filter placed in between, or multiple masks — that protection afforded by h...
