Coronavirus variant found in South Africa worries scientists – Salon

Naturally, the coronavirus mutates as it spreads. But scientists are more concerned about some mutations more than others, and there's one in particular that's worrisome because it could throw a wrench in future vaccine efficacy. Specifically, variant 20C/501Y.V2 — also known as B.1.351 lineage — which has emerged in Durban, South Africa, is alarming because the mutation of the virus is at the SARS-CoV-2 Spike, disguising its appearance to the immune system which can make it easier to bypass immune protection. Think of it like someone putting a wig on to go to a party they weren't invited to, and tricking the bouncer by changing their appearance to enter. "The concern is that it has a structural change that may change the shape of the Spike protein in a way that it may not be as easily...

Should you be more worried about new coronavirus strains? Not yet, experts say. – USA TODAY

Two major variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 have emerged in recent weeks, raising questions about their contagiousness and accuracy of testing – but neither is more dangerous than the virus that has circulated for the last year, experts say, and available vaccines should remain effective. COVID-19 testing labs across the U.S. should be monitoring samples for mutated variants of the virus, the Food and Drug Administration said Friday. There is a chance the mutations will cause some tests to return false-negative results,the agency warned, though it's unlikely most tests will miss people who are contagious.  "The FDA believes the risk that these mutations will impact overall testing accuracy is low," according to the statement.  In more than a year of circulation, the virus has mut...

We lost to SARS-CoV-2 in 2020. We can defeat B-117 in 2021 – STAT – STAT

We are barely a week into 2021 and already there are urgent warnings about a novel pandemic virus strain spreading surreptitiously and exponentially across the world. This seems like déjà vu. So we lost to it. advertisement But are better prepared for this new enemy, called B.1.1.7, or B-117 for short. We already understand how this new virus spreads, which public health strategies can help contain it, and how to effectively treat people infected with it. We’re already performing milli...

How Kate Middleton Is Preparing for Her Life as Queen – Yahoo Entertainment

If she weren't, you know, one of the more recognizable faces on the planet, Kate Middleton could easily be mistaken for just another harried mom at Prince George and Prince Charlotte's school drop-off. Because unlike every one of her carefully thought-out work appearances, before the Duchess of Cambridge makes the four-mile trip from their Kensington Palace spread to Thomas's Battersea in south London, she doesn't bother with her signature blowout or a consult with longtime stylist Natasha Archer. "There are no blow-dries—it's always hair up in a ponytail," a longtime friend noted to People of the "very chilled" royal's low-maintenance routine. "She's either in her gym clothes, or a dress and sneakers, very little makeup, apologizing as she's late for the school run before dashing off." P...

Farewell @realDonaldTrump, Gone But Not Forgotten – HuffPost

WASHINGTON (AP) — @realDonaldTrump, the Twitter feed that grew from the random musings of a reality TV star into the cudgel of an American president, died Friday. It was not quite 12 years old. The provocative handle was given birth by a New York real estate tycoon who used it to help him become the 45th U.S. president. It began with a May 4, 2009, tweet promoting Donald Trump’s upcoming appearance on David Letterman’s show. It died more than 57,000 tweets later, with Trump using some of his final postings on the powerful platform to commiserate with a pro-Trump mob that besieged the halls of Congress as lawmakers were set to certify his defeat. The account met its demise when Twitter announced Friday it was pulling the plug permanently on @realDonaldTrump, citing concern that Tru...
