Intestinal bacteria may affect severity of COVID-19, researchers find – New York Post

The bacteria lurking in COVID-19 patients’ intestines may play a role in how sick they get from the illness, according to new research. Although the coronavirus is primarily a respiratory disease, there is increasing evidence that suggests the GI tract is involved, scientists at the Chinese University of Hong Kong said. The team studied samples from 100 patients treated at two Hong Kong hospitals to see how the so-called microbiome in the digestive system might affect recovery from the deadly bug. “Gut microbiome composition was significantly altered in patients with COVID-19 compared with non-COVID-19 individuals irrespective of whether patients had received medication,” they wrote in the British Medical Journal’s publication Gut. “Based on several p...

Coronavirus shutdowns have quashed nearly all other common viruses. But scientists say a rebound is coming. – Washington Post

These other viruses — including influenza A, influenza B, parainfluenza, norovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus — all appear to be circulating at or near levels lower than ever previously measured. The same is true for the respiratory bacteria that cause pertussis, better known as whooping cough, and pneumonia. “It’s crazy,” said Lynnette Brammer, who leads the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Domestic Influenza Surveillance team. “This is my 30th flu season. I never would have expected to see flu activity this low.” In 2019, during the third week of December, before the coronavirus struck the United States, the CDC’s network of clinical labs reported that 16.2 percent of the 29,578 samples tested were positive for influenza A. During the same w...

How Our Sex Habits May Affect Our HPV and Cancer Risk – The New York Times

Almost 45 percent of patients had had more than 10 sexual partners during their lifetimes, compared with 19 percent of the cancer-free controls. People under 23 who had a sexual partner at least 10 years older were more likely to be infected, possibly because older people have had longer exposure to the virus. Deep kissing was also associated with increased risk. Those who had 10 or more deep-kissing partners were more than twice as likely to have an HPV-related cancer as those who had none or one. People who reported that their partners had extramarital affairs, and those who even suspected that their partners had had affairs, also had an increased risk of HPV-associated throat cancer. There was no association of HPV-related throat cancer with smoking, alcohol consumption or substance us...

Millions have a real fear of needles. Overcoming that is critical for the vaccine rollout – CNN

Getting one, however, is still an ordeal for Walker, who has needle phobia. "I'll start to get really clammy, and then get cold sweats," she said, describing her reaction to routine injections. "Then I pass out." Walker has been living with fear of getting injections for years. She remembers being terrified, at age 12 or 13, when receiving a flu shot at the doctor's office. Fortunately, experts say treatments for needle phobia can be highly effective. Leaving the condition untreated, however, can result in a fear that grows even more intense over time. What is a phobia? "Phobia is a fear and anxiety about a specific stimulus," explained Dr. Jeffrey Geller, president of the American Psychiatric Association and a professor of psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. ...

Jeopardy! guest host Ken Jennings pays tribute to Alex Trebek, Twitter reacts – Fox News

The first "Jeopardy!" episode without host Alex Trebek aired on Monday. Following the iconic game show host's tragic death last year due to pancreatic cancer, "Jeopardy!" has elected to line up several guest hosts until a replacement is named, and frequent champ Ken Jennings is first on the list. He took to the stage for Monday's episode, and in Trebek fashion, offered a brief monologue in tribute to the late host before kicking off the game. "You know, sharing this stage with Alex Trebek was one of the greatest honors of my life," he began. "Not many things in life are perfect, but Alex did this job pretty much perfectly for more than 36 years, and it was even better up close."
