Not enough adolescents are signing up for Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine trial, a federal official said this week, potentially delaying vaccine authorization for this age group. Last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration OK'd use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for 16- to 17-year-olds, as well as adults. The companies did not have enough data in younger adolescents to apply for use in that age group, and Moderna had only tested its vaccine in adults, so it is only authorized for 18 and up. Blood plasma transfusions with high concentrations of COVID-19 antibodies reduced deaths among some virus patients, according to a new study conducted by Mayo Clinic researchers, lending credibility to one of the few known treatments for the illness. “Early administration of high-titer convalescent plasma against SARS-CoV-2 to mildly ill infected older adults reduced the progression of Covid-19,” the researchers concluded. The Oregon Health Authority on Wednesday reported 1,346 new confirmed or presumptive coronavirus cases and 41 more fatalities, including a 19-year-old from Marion County, the youngest Oregonian to have died from COVID-19. The numbers represent the second straight day of more than 40 new fatality announcements, though the state said Tuesday that the lengthy process of confirming some deaths had delayed some announcements. In Riverside County, people 65 years and older can start getting their coronavirus vaccine Thursday, along with adults of all ages if they work in education, law enforcement, food and agriculture, and emergency services. That group makes up Phase 1B in the county's vaccine distribution framework. People in all tiers of Phase 1A can also be vaccinated.
