Why Awkwafina says she still lives with an All I need is $500 a month mindset – CNBC

Nora Lum, known by her stage name Awkwafina, may have an estimated net worth in the millions, but she still lives with the mindset that she just needs $500 per month in order to get by, she recently told E. Alex Jung in the February cover story for Harper's Bazaar. Lum, 32, says the money philosophy stretches back to the early days as she was building her Awkwafina musical and comedy persona, which she used as a creative outlet while working a day job in book publicity. At the encouragement of a friend, she recorded a music video for "My Vag" on her 24th birthday, all but certain it would give her employer reason to fire her (she adds she was a "horrible assistant" regardless). She did get fired, but at the same time, the song got picked up on The Hairpin, circulated the int...

CDC concerned coronavirus variant may dominate US – Fox News

A new and more infectious strain of coronavirus that was first found in the United Kingdom will likely become the dominant strain in the United States by March, health officials said. The U.K. variant is in 12 states but it has been diagnosed in only 76 of the 23 million U.S. cases reported to date. However, the virus variant is likely more widespread in the United States, according to scientists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE CORONAVIRUS COVERAGE While it’s considered more infectious than the virus that’s been causing the bulk of U.S. cases so far, there’s no evidence that it causes more severe illness or is transmitted differently. Therefore, mask-wearing, social distancing, hand washing and other prevention strategies can still work,...

Flying In The Pandemic: How To Cope With Folks Who Ignore Risk Reduction Rules : Goats and Soda – NPR

Each week, we answer "frequently asked questions" about life during the coronavirus crisis. If you have a question you'd like us to consider for a future post, email us at goatsandsoda@npr.org with the subject line: "Weekly Coronavirus Questions." When I booked a flight from Boston to D.C. in mid-January, I knew that sharing confined indoor spaces with strangers was a risk in the middle of a pandemic. But a year into Living with the Coronavirus, I figured it wasn't a HUGE risk. My reasoning: 1) It's a short flight. 2) Everyone knows how to wear a mask and social distance by now. 3) Surely airlines have adopted measures to help reduce chances of transmission if a traveler is infected but does...

WarnerMedia extends its 20 percent discount on HBO Max subscriptions – The Verge

A discount on HBO Max that was supposed to end today, January 15th, has been extended until March 1st, 2021. The fine print of the offer hasn’t changed: you can get six months of HBO Max for 20 percent off the normal total cost, which is usually $90 before tax. You’ll pay $70 with this deal (it’s like paying just under $12 per month instead of $15), but the catch is that you have to prepay in full and it’s nonrefundable. This discount is open to both new and returning HBO Max subscribers, but it can’t be stacked with a free trial or any other promotion. WarnerMedia kicked off this deal in early December 2020 on the heels of Warner Bros. announcing that its 2021 slate of films would debut on HBO Max alongside the theatrical releases and remain available to stream for 30 days. Won...

Fear over COVID variant grows; L.A. County mulls more closures – Los Angeles Times

Los Angeles County and the rest of the nation are in a race against time to vaccinate as many people as possible against the coronavirus before a variant thought to be even more contagious takes hold. Those concerns were underscored in a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released Friday, which stated that new modeling indicates the variant “has the potential to increase the U.S. pandemic trajectory in the coming months,” with the projection showing “rapid growth in early 2021, becoming the predominant variant in March.” The new strain, first identified in Britain, weighs heavily in the minds of L.A. County public health officials as they weigh potential new health orders aimed at stymying the spread of the disease. Settings that could be scrutinized further include ...

This is not a game: Global virus death toll hits 2 million – Associated Press

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The global death toll from COVID-19 topped 2 million Friday, crossing the threshold amid a vaccine rollout so immense but so uneven that in some countries there is real hope of vanquishing the outbreak, while in other, less-developed parts of the world, it seems a far-off dream. The numbing figure was reached just over a year after the coronavirus was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The number of dead, compiled by Johns Hopkins University, is about equal to the population of Brussels, Mecca, Minsk or Vienna. It is roughly equivalent to the Cleveland metropolitan area or the entire state of Nebraska. “There’s been a terrible amount of death,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, a pandemic expert and dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health. At the same time, he s...
