States look for more Covid-19 vaccine doses as the nations death toll nears 400,000 – CNN

CDC officials implored Americans to continue with preventative measures against the coronavirus, while highlighting the variant first identified in Britain known as B.1.1.7. The B.1.1.7 variant appears to more readily infect human cells and one CDC simulation of its transmissibility raised concerns that it could become the most dominant form of coronavirus in March. The CDC called for continued and aggressive vaccine distribution to try and stem the tide. "Higher vaccination coverage might need to be achieved to protect the public," CDC researchers warned. On Friday, 3,258 people died of Covid-19 in the US, as the total number of deaths from the pandemic edged closer to 400,000. The nation also recorded its 11th consecutive day of more than 200,000 infections, per Johns Hopkins Univ...

Coronavirus recoverers can become reinfected, spread virus to others – The Jerusalem Post

People who have previously been infected with coronavirus and who are themselves protected by antibodies could still carry the virus and infect others, according to a study conducted in England. The study, called “SARS-COV-2 Immunity and Reinfection Evaluation” (SIREN) and conducted between June 18 and November 24, 2020, also found that while reinfection is possible, it appears to be rare, at least for the first five months after becoming sick.  The study was first published at the end of last week. It was written about in the peer-reviewed journal The BMJ and the science journal  Nature, among other publications. Of the participants in the study who had already fallen ill (around 6,600), only 44 (less than 1%) were reinfected with the virus. In other words, immune res...

For some hardcore Trump supporters like Ben Philips, of Bloomburg, Pennsylvania, the income earned through the site augments an existing pro-MAGA business. Philips is the owner of the Trumparoo toy company, which makes stuffed kangaroo toys with a Trump-like tuft of orange hair that he sells to passengers in the van caravans he organizes on Eventbrite, charging $25 per person. (Eventbrite typically charges $.79 per ticket sold plus 4.5% fee for ticket sales on its platform.) On Jan. 6 Philips died on the steps of Capitol Hill from a sudden stroke, hours after he dropped off a van full of Trump supporters he met on the site at the presidential rally, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Passengers learned of Philips’ death when he didn’t return to the van. After multiple calls to his ce...

‘Cheap shot’ criticism of COVID vaccines for 2M smokers before other groups is ‘false narrative,’ Murphy says – NJ.com

Gov. Phil Murphy pushed back Friday against criticism that the state included roughly 2 million smokers in the big expansion of coronavirus vaccine eligibility that started on Thursday, while leaving out some groups of essential workers like teachers. The governor, speaking during his regular COVID-19 briefing, said he rejected the “false narrative” that smokers are jumping the line as a “cheap shot,” and noted that the state was following federal guidance by including smokers. “I get it. I understand the optics here and that attacking folks who took up the habit of smoking and who are now addicted may be politically expedient,” Murphy said. “But at this time we are stuck in a position where we have to prioritize our limited vaccine doses based on medical fact and not political want,...

Where did COVID-19 come from? – USA TODAY

The coronavirus that conquered the world came from a thumb-sized bat tucked inside a remote Chinese cave. Of this much, scientists are convinced.   Exactly how and when it fled the bat to begin its devastating flight across the globe remain open questions.  In just one year, SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has infected 100 million people and killed 2 million, 400,000 of them in the U.S. Answers could stop such a calamity from happening again. Researchers in China, under government scrutiny, have been investigating since January. This week, a World Health Organization delegation of scientists from 10 different nations finally was allowed in the country to explore the virus' origins.   "This is important not just for COVID-19, but for the future of global health security and to ...
