Shots reportedly fired at Billie Lourds home by irate construction worker – New York Post

California cops raced to “Star Wars” actress Billie Lourd’s Los Angeles home after shots were fired by an irate construction worker, according to a report Thursday. LAPD sources told TMZ that officers were called to the Beverly Hills properties where Lourd is combining the homes of her late mother and grandmother — screen legends Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds — into an $18 million mega-estate. After being let go from the job, an unidentified construction worker pulled out a rifle, aimed it at another worker, and fired at least one shot into the ground, the outlet said. No one was injured and new mom Lourd, 28, was not home at the time, TMZ said, without giving a time or date for the alleged shooting. Police were still on the hunt for the alleged gun...

Covid-19 Disbelief Saddles Health-Care Workers With Another Challenge – The Wall Street Journal

Dr. Michaela Schulte works overnight shifts at St. Luke’s Health System hospitals near Boise, Idaho, treating some of the hundreds of critically ill Covid-19 patients filling hospital beds in her state during the most severe period of the pandemic so far. She, like many other health-care workers, faces yet another challenge in keeping up with the recent surge in coronavirus cases: A number of people in her community say the virus isn’t as bad as public-health and news reports indicate—and some say it isn’t real. Outside the hospital—at the grocery-store checkout line after work, or through family friends—Dr. Schulte says she hears people calling the virus a hoax and saying medical professionals are exaggerating the severity. The disbelief, on top of the re...

CDC reduces COVID exposure quarantine time to 10 days with no symptoms – CBS News

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced new quarantine guidelines for people who were exposed to coronavirus, reducing the length of time from 14 days to 10 days without symptoms or seven days with no symptoms and a negative test. Officials said the shorter time period is intended to encourage more people to quarantine.  "Reducing the length of quarantine may encourage more people to do so, especially when they may not be able to work during quarantine time," CDC's COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Henry Walke, told reporters on a call Wednesday. He said the agency still recommends 14 days, but is now offering two "acceptable alternative quarantine periods."  "As we learn more about the virus, we continue to refine our guidance," Walke said, emphasizing that everyone ...

Dear Abby: Maybe I exposed them to COVID, but do I really deserve this treatment? – The Mercury News

DEAR ABBY: My husband came down with COVID and has been having a hard time getting over it. Jeanne Phillips When he first started showing the symptoms, I took him to a drive-through medical clinic and got him tested for COVID. The results were negative, so a couple of days later, I carpooled with a friend to another friend’s house where seven other friends had gathered. Several days later, when my husband still wasn’t improving, I took him to an ER where they did another COVID test. This time it came out positive. I thought I owed it to whomever I was around at the get-together to tell them about my husband. At this get-together, we all wore masks. We took them off only to eat and then put them back on. It has been more than 14 days since my husband got sick, and although he is n...

Manohla Dargis | A.O. Scott Manohla Dargis I Watched Until My Eyes Bled It was a year of watching obsessively yet indiscriminately, a year of small and smaller screens. On one lost day not long ago, I spent a horrifying (embarrassing!) 11 hours and 15 minutes on my phone. I read the news, doomscrolled Twitter, did puzzles, checked my email and kept scrolling. It’s no wonder that my eyes had begun to regularly ache and sometimes sting, prompting me to worry that I needed a new prescription for my glasses. I didn’t, I just needed to stop watching, but I couldn’t put down my phone, which tethered me to the larger world that I greatly missed. The point of a top 10 list is to share our preferred movies. But in thinking about my favorites of the year and all the many new and old titles I’ve se...

For churchgoers during the Covid-19 pandemic, a deadly lesson from the 1918 flu – CNN

Those who refused to adapt to the pandemic reaped the consequences. In Zamora, Spain, "mass gatherings were positively encouraged — and at 3 per cent, or more than twice the national average, Zamora had the highest death rate of any city in Spain," wrote science journalist Laura Spinney in her book " Pale Rider: The Spanish Flu of 1918 and How It Changed the World." In September, a local bishop rebelled against health authorities by ordering evening prayers for nine days "in honour of St. Rocco, the patron saint of plague and pestilence, because the evil that had befallen Zamoranos was 'due to our sins and ingratitude, for which the avenging arm of eternal justice has been brought down upon us,' " Spinney wrote. On the first day, "he dispensed Holy Communion to a large crow...

Coronavirus updates: One-day death toll surpasses 3,000; CDC director warns of 450K deaths by February; 48 NBA players test positive – USA TODAY

The nation's one-day toll of coronavirus deaths reported Thursday surpassed 3,000 for the first time, a number perhaps inflated by fatalities reported late due to the Thanksgiving holiday but still reflective of a pandemic racing out of control. The death toll reported in the last two days alone was 5,744. And hospitalizations surpassed 100,000 for the first time Wednesday. The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted the U.S. could reach 450,000 deaths by February. "The reality is, December and January and February are going to be rough times, and I actually believe they’re going to be the most difficult time in the public health history of our nation, largely because of the stress it’s going to put on our public health system," Dr. Robert Redfield said Wednes...

Bridging Troubled Waters

Screen + Sound + Stage Text by Uday Kapur “More than any political party, I’m afraid of what my extended family could do to me,” says Sumit Singh Solanki. “I wish I could tell these stories more freely because they’re an open secret. I could try and reason with them, but in their eyes, I’m still a child.” Solanki, who hails from Ranchi, is one of India’s most exciting young artists. The 23-year-old produces and raps under the moniker Tre Ess (it came about when he was trying to abbreviate his name) and has fast established himself as a key figure in the movement to create and push forward-thinking alternative music rooted in tradition. SoBo BonoBo, Solanki’s latest album, is a delightful juxtaposition of modern rap and local instrumenta...
