Andy Griffith Slickly Paid Homage to His Real-Life Father in The Andy Griffith Show – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The Andy Griffith Show was one of the most influential and popular television programs of the twentieth century. The sitcom was a massive hit, and it received large amounts of praise for its unique blend of realism and nostalgia. While this style of nostalgia wasn’t uncomplicated by problematic implications and a lack of engagement with the world outside of the show, it ultimately still is remembered fondly quite today by scores of people who grew up with the show. The star himself, Andy Griffith, is similarly beloved for his work both on and off of this sitcom. Though The Andy Griffith Show takes place in the 1960s, the same decade as when it was shot, it evoked an earlier time. Was Griffith thinking back to his childhood when he helped conceive the show? What did G...

David Fincher Calls Joaquin Pheonix Oscar-Winning Joker Betrayal of the Mentally Ill – TooFab

The "Gone Girl" director says the film would have never been greenlit were it not for the financial success of "The Dark Knight." Everyone knows that money talks when it comes to pretty much everything, but according to David Fincher, it's pretty much all that talks when it comes to making films these days, which is why we're seeing so many spinoffs, remakes and sequels. The acclaimed "Mank" director went so far as to say Joaquin Phoenix' billion-dollar juggernaut "Joker" film was only given a green light because Heath Ledger's "The Dark Knight" portrayal had already proven successful. Prince Harry appears on UK version of Dancing with the Stars to cheer on fellow military veteran – Fox News

Prince Harry made a surprise cameo on the latest episode of the BBC’s “Strictly Come Dancing.”  The Duke of Sussex surprised everyone with a brief video cameo in which he cheered on fellow British military veteran JJ Chalmers, one of the show’s contestants this season. The moment on the U.K. original version of "Dancing with the Stars" marked one of Harry’s first public appearances in the U.K. since he and Meghan Markle stepped down from their senior royal duties to live in California.  Harry called into one of Chalmers' training sessions with partner Amy Dowden to congratulate him on all his success and lightly tease his old friend for some of his wardrobe choices on the dancing show.  “Nice tan JJ!” Harry joked. Scientists pour cold water on ‘intriguing’ — and potentially fatal — similarity between COVID-19 and 1918 flu – MarketWatch

Despite early comparisons between COVID-19 and influenza, coronavirus was never going to be just another flu. It comes from a different family of viruses and it has proven far more pernicious and unpredictable. Even so, “cytokine storms,” where the immune system turns on the body by overreacting to a virus, were widely regarded as playing a critical role in 1918 influenza pandemic. Yet there is no broad agreement within the scientific community about the molecular development of how vastly different viruses can precipitate a cytokine storm, or how best to treat such a hyperinflammatory immune response. So much is still unknown about the phenomenon, and yet it crops up as a popular, if simple, explanation for many pandemic-related fatalities. Not all historians and scientists ag...

Coronavirus vaccine: Cold storage remains hurdle for Pfizer vaccine distribution – Yahoo Finance

Concerns over vaccine storage and distribution amid unprecedented global demand are weighing on the anticipation of a vaccine from Pfizer (PFE) and BioNTech (BNTX) — even as the companies prepare to fulfill commitments of dose delivery by the end of 2020. With data set to be released in the coming week and an emergency use authorization likely to be granted by the end of the year, how to ensure the integrity of the vaccines once they’ve reached their destinations — and who will receive the first doses remains largely unknown. The companies revealed the freezers being used, which can keep the vaccine for six months, in a presentation in September. More than 300 freezers are currently at a plant in Kalamazoo, Mich., with plans to create an equally-sized “freezer farm” in Wisconsin. The Mich...

Ask Amy: Why was she so hurtful about my new wife? – The Mercury News

Dear Amy: My former wife and I were married for almost 30 years. Columnist Amy Dickinson (Bill Hogan/Chicago Tribune) Eight years ago, she informed me that she wanted to change careers and move to a different part of the country. For many different reasons, I chose not to follow her on her new path, and we went through an amicable divorce. My ex and I have had little contact, but always cordial, via telephone and text message. We have no children, and there was never any expectation that we would reconcile. Six years ago, I developed a relationship with another woman. I told my ex-wife about my new relationship, and she seemed happy for me. Three months ago, my new wife and I got married. A week or two after my wedding, I texted my ex to let her know. Her reply was curt and p...

Our neighbors, our family members: Small-town hospitals overwhelmed by COVID deaths – USA TODAY

In North Texas, Moore County Hospital District CEO Jeff Turner is managing more than his small rural hospital can handle. The Dumas hospital has space and staff for 11 coronavirus patients, but only three who are really sick and need intensive care. When they need lifesaving therapies Turner's hospital can't provide, his staff tries to find open beds at larger hospitals in Amarillo, about 50 miles to the south. When those hospitals are full, his staff scours for space, first in Midland, Wichita Falls and Lubbock, then in Dallas, Denver, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City — even Kansas City, Missouri, more than 500 miles away. Some patients have died waiting for space at big-city hospitals. Six patients died in six days recently; two died in a 24-hour period last week. “In a small town, these are ...
