Dolly Parton helped fund Moderna’s vaccine. It began with a car crash and an unlikely friendship. – Washington Post

Their bond of nearly seven years received worldwide attention Tuesday after it was revealed that Parton’s $1 million donation to Vanderbilt for coronavirus research, made in honor of Abumrad, partially funded the biotechnology firm Moderna’s experimental vaccine, which a preliminary analysis released this week found is nearly 95 percent effective at preventing the illness. In an interview with The Washington Post, Abumrad recalled how Parton’s curiosity about Vanderbilt’s coronavirus research led to a gift that helped fund the vaccine that could be one of two available in the United States on a limited basis by the end of the year. Among the agencies and universities listed as funding sources for the Moderna vaccine was “the Dolly Parton COVID-19 Research Fund,” which left some on soci...

900 Mayo Clinic staffers diagnosed with COVID-19 over last two weeks – New York Post

More than 900 staffers at the Mayo Clinic have reportedly been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past two weeks. Dr. Amy Williams, dean of clinical practices at the multi-state hospital system, announced the number on Tuesday during a call with reporters. According to Williams, 93 percent of the cases in the clinic were contracted in community areas, such as break rooms, while employees were eating or partaking in other activities with their masks off, according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press. “It shows you how easy it is to get COVID-19 in the Midwest,” said Williams. “Our staff are being infected mostly due to community spread, and this impacts our ability to care for patients. We need everyone in the communities we serve to do their part to limit the spread of COVID-19.”...

The Thanksgiving time bomb – Axios

Coronavirus cases and hospitalizations are at new peaks, cities and states are weighing second lockdowns, and flu season is upon us — but we're all looking the other way. Why it matters: Pandemic fatigue has set in and the nation has collectively stopped caring just in time for the holiday season. This Thanksgiving could be catastrophic for public health. Compare April's Zoom seders with the in-person Thanksgiving dinners being planned all across the country. The number of Americans driving or flying this Thanksgiving will be in the tens of millions, per AAA (though travel will be down from 2019). According to CBS, the Transportation Security Administration expects to screen six million travelers this holiday. Canceled spring proms and graduations have been replaced with fall birthday ba...

Ohio wedding linked to at least 32 coronavirus cases: Nobodys wearing a mask – Fox News

At least 32 people who attended a wedding in Ohio last month have reportedly contracted the coronavirus, including the bride and groom and two of the couple’s grandparents who had to visit the emergency room for severe symptoms. A third grandparent also tested positive for the virus but didn't have to go to the hospital.  Anthony and Mikayla Bishop cut their wedding party guest list down from 200 to 85 before they were married on Oct. 31 in Blue Ash, a city in the suburbs of Cincinnati, WLWT-TV in Cincinnati reported.  "Weddings are definitely scary right now,” Mikayla Bishop told WLWT. “I didn't think that almost half of our wedding guests were gonna get sick. You're in the moment. You're having fun. You don't think about COVID anymore." NEW CORONAVIRUS WEDDING RULES IN OHIO IGNITE ...

Here Are the 8 Likeliest Grammy Nominees in Each of the Big Four Categories – Billboard

Here’s our best guess as to what the nominees will be -- the eight top contenders (in alphabetical order, just as they will appear on the list of nominations and, later, the Grammy ballot). We also briefly list eight top alternates. These categories are fiercely competitive. There were 1,225 entries for album of the year, 1,463 for record of the year, 1,443 for song of the year and 343 for best new artist. You will hear the word “snub” thrown around a lot on Tuesday. In the Big Four categories, especially, if something isn’t nominated, it isn’t necessarily a snub. It could mean someone came in ninth out of more than a thousand entries. Keep that in mind. Here we go. (Wish us luck.) Album of the year Fiona Apple, Fetch the Bolt Cutters: This would be the first album of the year nod for ...

Strange Case Sees Kids Develop Coronavirus Antibodies Without Ever Testing Positive – ScienceAlert

From the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, scientists observed that children seemed to be less susceptible to developing COVID-19, although the exact reasons why remain unclear.   Now, an unusual case in Australia may provide unique insight into the mystery, thanks to the experience of a young family from Melbourne. In this family of five, the two parents became sick with COVID-19 after attending an interstate wedding without their children. However, the symptoms didn't show until days after they had returned from the trip. Nonetheless, completely unbeknownst to them, they had brought SARS-CoV-2 into their home, and exposed their children to it. The family with researchers from MCRI. (MCRI) Once both the parents developed symptoms – including cough, congested nose, fever and h...
