California COVID-19 cases hit record amid new restrictions – Los Angeles Times

The coronavirus continues to rampage through California at a record rate, prompting the state to reimpose restrictions not seen since the early days of the pandemic in a bid to beat back the accelerating surge. Statewide, 13,422 new coronavirus cases were reported Thursday — breaking the single-day record for the second time this week. The previous high-water mark — 13,412 — was set Monday, according to an independent county-by-county tally conducted by The Times. California has now recorded four consecutive days with at least 10,600 newly confirmed coronavirus cases, a stretch unlike any in the pandemic. Over the last week, the state has averaged 10,529 new cases per day, a 117% increase from two weeks ago. And those skyrocketing case counts aren’t mere numbers on a spreadsheet. Authori...

COVID-19 Statistics | Nov. 20, 2020 – Lost Coast Outpost

Press release from the Humboldt County Joint Information Center: Nine months after the first case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in Humboldt County, the total number of county residents who have tested positive for the virus stands at 730, after 19 new cases were reported today.   Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich said there is still time to slow transmission of the virus, but it will take a communitywide effort. “If we do not follow the safety guidelines that have been in place for months, especially as we head into Thanksgiving, we will see more illness in our friends and loved ones,” she said. “This is a time when we must take on the responsibility of protecting and caring for one another.”   For the most recent COVID-19 information, visit cdc.gov or cdph.ca.g...

Sewage test in N.J. county looking to catch COVID-19 outbreaks 2 weeks ahead – nj.com

Bergen County, which continues to be one of the hardest hit by the coronavirus since New Jersey’s first case, is testing the county’s sewage for COVID-19, potentially anticipating outbreaks two weeks before they hit, officials said. In a press conference Friday, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco announced that through a partnership with Columbia University, the Bergen County Utilities Authority and Aecom, a global engineering firm, the county had been testing its wastewater for COVID-19 and hopes to expand the testing statewide. “Global and United States studies have shown that this type of monitoring can provide an early indication up to two weeks of increases or decreases in COVID cases in an area,” said Tedesco. The testing, already used in colleges and universities like Columbia U...

MoNique Demands an Apology From Tyler Perry After Will Smith and Janet Hubert Make Amends – E! Online

Mo'Nique still wants her public apology. On Wednesday, Nov. 18, HBO Max aired a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion that saw Will Smith and Janet Hubert, the first actress to play his mother on the '90s comedy series, make amends after decades of feuding. An act Mo'Nique is applauding—and one she hopes Tyler Perry is taking note of. "Hats off to Will Smith for apologizing for what he did to Janet Huberts (everybody's Aunt Viv) career/life when he was young," she wrote in a Thursday, Nov. 19 Instagram post. "Perhaps Tyler Perry, who has admitted in private that he was wrong will follow suit & be man enough to apologize in public like he promised. We'll work on Oprah [Winfrey] & Lions Gate a little later." Mo'Nique told her long-standing foe Tyler, with whom she has been feuding f...

Disney World to bring back park hopping on January 1 – CNN

(CNN) — Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando says it's bringing back the Park Hopper ticket on January 1, with some restrictions. This ticket allows admission to more than one park on a single day. A modified Park Hopper option will be available in 2021 but will require visitors to make reservations for their first park and physically go to that park before heading to another, Disney announced in a blog post on Friday. Park Hopper hours will start at 2 p.m. each day and end at the park's closing time, according to Disney. "These modifications are designed to help us continue managing attendance in a way that fosters physical distancing," the blog post said. "Additionally, other enhanced health and safety measures remain in effect, including face coverings required for all guests ages ...

Wipeout contestant dead after completing obstacle course – New York Post

A contestant on the TBS reboot of “Wipeout” has died after completing the show’s obstacle course. A male contestant needed help and was tended to by on-set emergency personnel after tackling the course Wednesday, sources close to production tell The Post. The participant was on the set in Santa Clarita, California — but not on the course itself — when he reportedly experienced chest pains before noon and medics used a defibrillator on him. Paramedics were called and he was transported to the hospital, where he later died. Contestants undergo medical exams ahead of filming, and the show, which has yet to air on the network, has on-site paramedics and doctors, as well as a safety producer. Production was paused Thursday and Friday, and the show was heading into a preplanned ...

Your Field Guide to the Four Potential COVID-19 Vaccines – Lifehacker

Photo: M-Foto (Shutterstock) It’s been a busy month for coronavirus vaccine news. In the past few weeks, we’ve seen announcements of interim phase 3 trial results, final phase 3 trial results, an FDA application, and phase 2 results. By my count, that’s five news events about three vaccines. It’s a bit confusing. Currently, four vaccine candidates are being tested in trials that will allow them to apply for FDA approval. (A fifth, Novovax, plans to start U.S. trials soon.) The New York Times vaccine tracker currently counts 13 vaccines in phase 3 trials worldwide. (Phase 3 is the last and largest round of testing before a vaccine is approved.) The four vaccines being tested in the U.S. are all a bit different from one another. Some require ultra cold storage. Some require two dose...

COVID SCIENCE-Childhood vaccine linked to less severe COVID-19, cigarette smoke raises risk – Yahoo Finance

By Nancy Lapid Nov 20 (Reuters) - The following is a roundup of some of the latest scientific studies on the novel coronavirus and efforts to find treatments and vaccines for COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus. Childhood vaccine may help prevent severe COVID-19 People whose immune systems responded strongly to a measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine may be less likely to become severely ill if they are infected with the new coronavirus, new data suggest. The MMR II vaccine, manufactured by Merck and licensed in 1979, works by triggering the immune system to produce antibodies. Researchers reported on Friday in mBio that among 50 COVID-19 patients under the age of 42 who had received the MMR II as children, the higher their titers -- or levels -- of so-called IgG antibodies produced ...
