Revolutionary CRISPR-based Genome Editing System Destroys Cancer Cells Permanently in Lab – Good News Network

Researchers at Tel Aviv University have demonstrated that the CRISPR genome editing system is very effective in treating metastatic cancers, a significant step on the way to finding a cure for cancer. In a paper published this week, the researchers demonstrated a novel lipid nanoparticle-based delivery system that specifically targets cancer cells—and co-author Prof. Dan Peer said it’s the first study in the world to prove that the CRISPR/Cas9 can be used to treat cancer effectively in a living animal. “It must be emphasized that this is not chemotherapy. There are no side effects, and a cancer cell treated in this way will never become active again,” said Peer, the VP for R&D and Head of the Laboratory of Precision Nanomedicine at the Shmunis School of Biomedicine and...

YouTuber chasing dreams fractures skull during jump from Texas bridge – New York Post

A YouTuber chasing his “dreams” fractured his skull after leaping into a river from atop a massive Texas bridge last week. Saa Fomba recorded last Monday’s stunt at Austin’s Pennybacker Bridge, posting it to his YouTube channel on Friday after several days in the hospital. The footage shows the daredevil as he hatches the dangerous stunt. “Hopefully this video will motivate you to chase after your dreams,” Fomba said to the camera as he prepared to jump into the Colorado river. “I don’t see no fun in living a normal life.” A woman later records Fomba scaling up an arch of the bridge. At the apex of the arch, Fomba raises his arms into the air before wildly jumping to the water below, the video shows. A boater pulled Fomba from the water and he is later seen lying on the ...

Malaria gains at risk from COVID-19 pandemic: WHO – Aljazeera.com

World Health Organization says disruptions to treatment could lead to tens of thousands additional deaths. Funding shortfalls and disruptions to treatment in sub-Saharan Africa as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic risk tens of thousands more lives being lost to malaria, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned in its annual report on the mosquito-borne disease on Monday. The UN’s health agency said it was concerned that even moderate disruptions in access to treatment could lead to a “considerable loss of life”. A 10-percent disruption in access to effective anti-malarial treatment in sub-Saharan Africa could lead to 19,000 additional deaths, the report found. That number rose to 46,000 with a 25-percent disruption in access and 100,000 at 50-percent disruption. “Progress has ...

Dave Prowse, actor who played Darth Vader, dies at 85 – KSL.com

LONDON (AP) — Dave Prowse, the British weightlifter-turned-actor who was the body, though not the voice, of arch-villain Darth Vader in the original "Star Wars" trilogy, has died. He was 85. Prowse died Saturday after a short illness, his agent Thomas Bowington said Sunday. Born in Bristol, southwest England, in 1935, Prowse was a three-time British weightlifting champion and represented England in weightlifting at the 1962 Commonwealth Games before breaking into movies with roles that emphasized his commanding size, including Frankenstein's monster in a pair of Hammer Studios horror films. Director George Lucas saw Prowse in a small part in "A Clockwork Orange" and asked the 6-foot-6-inch (almost 2-meter) actor to audition for the villainous Vader or the Wookie Chewbacca in "Star Wars." ...

Sean Connerys Cause of Death Revealed One Month Following His Passing – NBC New York

It's been nearly a month since Hollywood lost a legend. Back in October, news broke that Sean Connery had passed away at the age of 90. The Oscar winner's loved ones issued a statement on his behalf and revealed that he died in the Bahamas, where he mainly spent his final years. "His wife Micheline and his two sons, Jason and Stephane have confirmed that he died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family," a statement read, which was shared with E! News on Oct. 31. "There will be a private ceremony followed by a memorial yet to be planned once the [coronavirus pandemic] has ended." At the time, it was unclear what caused Sean's death. However, TMZ has recently shed some light on his passing. On Sunday, Nov. 29, the outlet obtained the star's death certificate and reported the re...

Diabetics’ sugar can rise based on how much they think they’re having, Harvard study finds – ThePrint

Representational image | Steve Buissinne | Pixabay Text Size: A- A+ New Delhi: Blood glucose levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes respond more to the perception of how much sugar is being consumed, rather than the actual intake, a study by Harvard University researchers has found. As a result, the researchers suggest that psychological programmes may be important for diabetes management, alongside medications, diet and exercise. The study, conducted by Chanmo Park, Francesco Pangini and Ellen Langer, published on 24 September, states: “The findings provide pressing evidence for the psychobiological model of chronic disease, suggesting that psychological intervention programmes may be important for diabetes manage...

Los Angeles County reports 5,000 new coronavirus cases day before new stay-at-home order takes effect – KABC-TV

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The surge in Los Angeles County coronavirus cases continues, with more than 5,000 new cases announced Sunday. The county announced 5,014 new cases and 16 additional deaths. There are 2,049 hospitalized with COVID-19 in the county. As the numbers continue to rise, the county's new safer-at-home order takes effect Monday, putting new limits on gatherings, activities and business occupancy. Officials urged people to stay home for the Thanksgiving holiday but hospitals are bracing for a new strain on their capacity after aviation authorities say an estimated 1 million flew through the nation's airports on Saturday alone. As part of the new order, playgrounds and cardrooms will also close again on Monday, after being allowed to reopen in October. The new order says peop...
