In Uncle Frank, Paul Bettany Embarks On Road Trip Through 1970s Gay Life – HuffPost

Alan Ball won an Oscar for his original screenplay of “American Beauty” and has established himself as a prestige television visionary with “Six Feet Under” and “True Blood.” His new Amazon Prime film, however, affords him an opportunity his earlier work did not: the chance to revisit ― and subsequently reimagine ― his own family history.  Written and directed by Ball, “Uncle Frank” follows Beth Bledsoe (played by Sophia Lillis), a young woman eager to escape small-town South Carolina in the early 1970s. She finds a kindred spirit in her uncle Frank (Paul Bettany), a New York University professor whose thoughtful demeanor and smart fashion sense set him apart from the rest of the Bledsoe clan, including his macho father (Stephen Root). When Beth arrives in New York to attend college, ...

Replication Cycle of SARS-CoV-2 in 3D – “We Can Expect the Coronavirus to Become Seasonal” – SciTechDaily

Infected cells were imaged by focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy, a powerful technique to reveal the organization of a cell at the subcellular level in 3D. In this image, a subvolume of one cell was segmented to display membrane-bound organelles (in grey) and double-membrane vesicles (in red) – a virus-specific compartment where the viral genome is replicated in large quantities. Credit: Julian Hennies/EMBL Learning how SARS-CoV-2 highjacks host cell machineries will help to develop therapeutic strategies. As the global coronavirus pandemic continues, scientists are not only trying to find vaccines and drugs to combat it, but also to continuously learn more about the virus itself. “By now we can expect the coronavirus to become seasonal,” explains Ralf Bartenschlager, ...

3rd major COVID-19 vaccine shown to be effective and cheaper – The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — Drugmaker AstraZeneca said Monday that late-stage trials showed its COVID-19 vaccine is highly effective, buoying the prospects of a relatively cheap, easy-to-store product that may become the vaccine of choice for the developing world. The results are based on an interim analysis of trials in the U.K. and Brazil of a vaccine developed by Oxford University and manufactured by AstraZeneca. No hospitalizations or severe cases of COVID-19 were reported in those receiving the vaccine. AstraZeneca is the third major drug company to report late-stage data for a potential COVID-19 vaccine as the world waits for scientific breakthroughs that will end a pandemic that has pummeled the world economy and led to 1.4 million deaths. But unlike the others, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine d...

The Weeknd puzzles fans by appearing at the 2020 AMAs with bloodied, bandaged face – Fox News

The Weeknd shocked many who tuned into the American Music Awards on Sunday when he showed up with a face covered in bloody bandages.  Fortunately, the musician, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, was not in any kind of accident or altercation prior to the show. In fact, he’s been appearing in public with fake injuries since August when he accepted awards at the MTV Video Music Awards in a similar getup. According to Yahoo Music, the bandages are part of a sort-of method acting move from the artist, whose VMA-winning music video for the hit song “Blinding Lights” shows him getting beaten up by bouncers and then injured in a drunk-driving accident.  The track belongs to the album “After Hours,” which the Weeknd explained to GQ is a concept album from the perspective of a “character losing...

The number of Covid-19 cases reported each week in Florida has tripled since the state reopened – CNN

In the past 7 days, the state has reported more than 53,000 -- meaning three times more Floridians have tested positive in the past week than in the week before the reopening. As the US grapples with the worst month yet in the pandemic for coronavirus infections and hospitalizations, Florida is nearing 1 million cases. As of Monday morning, the state had reported 938,414 infections, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In an effort to curb the spread of the virus, a bipartisan group of mayors from across the state asked DeSantis last week to issue a mask mandate, bolster contact tracing, increase funding for Covid-19 testing, and give mayors more local control. While DeSantis issued a video message sharing "promising news" about therapeutics and vaccines, he did not addre...

Vegans are 43 percent more likely to suffer bone fractures, study shows – New York Post

Vegans may be significantly more likely to develop bone fractures than meat-eaters, a new study revealed. The large, longitudinal study published Sunday in the journal BMC Medicine, revealed that there were 19.4 more cases of fractures in vegans and 4.1 more cases in vegetarians for every 1,000 people over 10 years. “This is the first comprehensive study and the largest study to date to look at the risks of both total fractures (fractures occurring anywhere in the body) and fractures at different sites in people of different habitual dietary habits,” the study’s lead author, Tammy Tong, a nutritional epidemiologist at the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford, said in an email to CNN. Researchers recruited nearly 55,000 healthy adults from the ...

People over 45 are at greater risk of STIs, new study finds – CNN

Negative attitudes toward sexual health and limited knowledge of the needs of over-45s mean some older people are unaware of the dangers of unprotected sex, researchers from the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands have warned. Experts associated with the SHIFT sexual health initiative surveyed 800 adults across the south coast of England and northern regions of Belgium and the Netherlands -- with some 200 respondents identified as facing socioeconomic disadvantage. Almost 80% of respondents in the general population group were aged between 45 and 65, while 58% of those considered socioeconomically disadvantaged were aged 45-54. Researchers said "major changes" in sexual behavior in recent decades have seen rising numbers of sexually active older people -- but many barely consider the ...
