Why COVID-19 deaths havent spiked like coronavirus cases – Los Angeles Times

For months, epidemiologists have predicted a spike in COVID-19 cases as winter approaches. Now it appears those dark forecasts were all too accurate. Coronavirus infections are rising across much of the United States, with the number of new daily cases nearing 200,000 for the past several days. That’s about five times the number of new daily cases the U.S. was reporting as recently as September, according to the World Health Organization. In California, the average number of new coronavirus cases has tripled in the last month alone. The virus is now infecting more Californians every day than at any previous point in the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a Times analysis. While the federal government continues to take a relatively hands-off approach, state and local governments have ...

After months of following COVID-19 guidelines, a Texas family let their guard down for a day. All 12 of them got sick. – msnNOW

Alexa Aragonez said her family prided themselves on following COVID-19 precautions for months before a dozen of them gathered Nov. 1 for a "low-key" get-together. Now the family is warning others to not make the same mistake. Within days, everyone who attended had tested positive and, soon, three other family members became sick as well. Weeks later, the family is still reeling from the outbreak, and those sickened are still battling symptoms, Aragonez told USA TODAY. Her mother, one of those who attended, was hospitalized for a week and may be on medication for the rest of her life because of damage from the virus. "Please don't be like my family and ignore the CDC guidelines. By staying apart, we can fight this virus together," Aragonez said in a public service announcement published by...

Coronavirus update: CDC to decrease quarantine time; UPS ramps up dry ice production – Yahoo Finance

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is aiming to reduce the quarantine requirements for someone potentially exposed to the virus from 14 days to somewhere between 7 to 10 days. The change in days, in addition to conducting a test, is being pursued as health officials try to gain better compliance with an increasingly covid-weary population, according to the Wall Street Journal. The decision is also guided by a better understanding of the phases of virus incubation and transmissibility. Within five days after exposure is when individuals typically display some symptoms, according to the CDC in October, but it can take as much as 14 days. But a recent study from the CDC, which has yet to be peer-reviewed, suggested seven days of isolation would be sufficient. “A 14-day...

Not Your Mother’s Thanksgiving   By Meg Jones - wife, mother, professional, contributor When I was a little girl, the period from Halloween through New Year’s was always the most exciting because it meant that I would see more of my siblings, all of whom are older and had gone off to college by the time I was 10, and that there would be a lot of great food and reasons to celebrate.  And of course my birthday falls in that period, so just ANOTHER excuse for a party.  Turns out I never grew out of this excitement and just to make it a little crazier, both of our daughters were born between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Yippee!  A swarm of Sagittarians.  Like me, our daughters treasure the holidays and for sure Thanksgiving is at the top of the list.  So we have estab...

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Shares Her Miscarriage Grief – The New York Times

Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister of Scotland, said in 2016 that she had lost a baby in 2011. In the royal family, Zara Tindall, the queen’s granddaughter, said in 2018 she had suffered two miscarriages. Leaders of three charities that offer support to parents after miscarriages said on Wednesday that they see significant spikes in people seeking help whenever a public figure speaks out. Losing a child is often an isolating experience, and the attention public figures bring to the subject makes people feel less alone, they said. “People suddenly admit to themselves and others that they’re hurting and they’re in pain,” said Zoe Clark-Coates, chief executive of the Mariposa Trust, a London-based charity. Experts say the taboo is narrowing as more people speak out, but there remains a stig...

Macys will hold its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade — but only for TV – CNN

(CNN) — If you live in New York City or had hoped to travel there for the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, you're out of luck. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, there will not be the usual millions lining the Manhattan parade route to watch the giant balloons, festive floats and performers. But take heart: The parade itself will go on. It's just going to be staged as a TV-only event in 2020. New Yorkers and visitors will have to enjoy the parade the way the rest of the country has traditionally done it -- from the comfort and safety of home. Parade changes In light of this year's unprecedented circumstances, Macy's partnered with the City of New York to safely produce this year's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will not look the same this...

With hope high for vaccine, Britain prepares to roll it out – Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — With major COVID-19 vaccines showing high levels of protection, British officials are cautiously — and they stress cautiously — optimistic that life may start returning to normal by early April. Even before regulators have approved a single vaccine, the U.K. and countries across Europe are moving quickly to organize the distribution and delivery systems needed to inoculate millions of citizens. “If we can roll it out at a good lick … then with a favorable wind, this is entirely hypothetical, but we should be able to inoculate, I believe on the evidence I’m seeing, the vast majority of the people who need the most protection by Easter,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Monday after vaccine makers in recent weeks have announced encouraging results. “That will make a very subs...

Virus Updates: Nursing Home Outbreaks Hit Record High; CDC to Shorten Length of Quarantine – NBC Chicago

Governors and mayors are ratcheting up mask mandates and imposing restrictions on small indoor gatherings that have been blamed for accelerating the spread of the coronavirus. But such measures are largely unenforceable, and officials are banking on voluntary compliance. Experts say that if people disregard the new state and local restrictions and socialize anyway, that could put greater stress on overburdened hospitals and lead to an even bigger spike in sickness and death over the holidays. The warning comes as 10 states reported single-day records of new infections on Tuesday. The U.S. has averaged 173,766 cases of the coronavirus per day over the last seven days, up from an average 87,340 cases per day four weeks ago, according to a tally by NBC News. In all, more than...
