1 out of 10 North Dakotans have tested positive for COVID-19 – INFORUM

Although active cases have been slowly declining, a total of 76,442 people have tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic, which means 1 out 10 North Dakotans have had COVID-19. Ten deaths were reported Thursday — five men and five women — from Burleigh, Cass, Dickey, Foster, McHenry, McKenzie and Ward counties. The number of people currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 is 302, with 38 in the ICU. Only 14.14% staffed beds are available in North Dakota. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates an increase in COVID-19 deaths with 10,600 to 21,400 more by Dec. 19, 2020. Experts have warned Thanksgiving gatherings may contribute in boosting the death toll throughout the nation. ...

Child-safety laws may reduce the birth rate – The Economist

IN THE EARLY 1970s American women gave birth, on average, to 2.12 children each. By 2018 that figure had fallen to 1.73. Many alterations in people’s lives have been invoked to help explain this change, including the facts that women now are better educated, more likely to have jobs or run businesses, and have better access to contraception than their antecedents of five decades ago. Also, demand for children to work as extra pairs of hands on family farms has dropped. None of these explanations, though, overlaps neatly with birth-rate curves. Other factors must be at work, too. Here’s What the Thanksgiving Parade Looked Like in Pandemic New York – The New York Times

It’s a yearly Thanksgiving Day tradition: Millions of spectators crammed onto long city blocks, hanging over barricades and balconies or pressed against the windows of towering office buildings to watch giant balloons, depicting cartoon characters like Pikachu, hovering just a few feet above the street. But this year, as with everything in 2020, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a ritual marker of the holiday, was drastically different. Because of the threat of the coronavirus, much of the parade in Manhattan was scaled down and pretaped for the television airing. The route was reduced from two miles to a single block down 34th Street, near the flagship department store. There were no high school bands. Instead of the usual 2,000 balloon handlers there were only about 130. Warning...

Another added, “A beautiful dog, a great winner. Congrats Claire! :)” The host of the annual Thanksgiving day competition, Kennel Club of Philadelphia President Wayne Ferguson, said it’s the first time in the show’s 135-year history that the breed emerged as a star. “Scott...
