In Arizona, the coronavirus raged. With masks and other measures, it subsided. What can it teach America? – The Washington Post

But by mid-August, the southwest hot spot made a remarkable reversal. Cases plummeted 75 percent. Arizona has maintained relatively low case numbers since, but they are now creeping to levels seen just a few weeks before its summer surge. And as a conflagration engulfs the Midwest and Mountain West, public health experts and elected officials in Arizona are pleading with residents to maintain mitigation measures they say played a critical role in beating back the virus and hold lessons for other states — including mask mandates that covered 85 percent of the population. “The mask ordinances should stay in place until we get pretty wide distribution of the vaccine,” said Will Humble, a former state health department director who now leads the Arizona Public Health Association. “The retu...

A Man With an Allergy to Cold Nearly Died After Stepping Out of a Hot Shower – Gizmodo

Photo: Jenny Kane (AP) A man’s rare intolerance to the cold almost killed him post-shower. In a recent case report, doctors describe how he developed a severe allergic reaction to the cold air he encountered after stepping out of a hot shower—serious enough to merit a trip to the emergency room and a stay in intensive care. According to the report, published last week in the Journal of Emergency Medicine, the 34-year-old man collapsed soon after taking a hot shower, due to a potentially fatal allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. His family eventually found him on the floor and called for paramedics. Once there, they gave him oxygen and epinephrine (routinely used to treat the low blood pressure and constricted breathing caused by anaphylaxis), then took him to the emergency room....

How Dungeons & Dragons’ next book deals with race, plus exclusive new pages and art – Polygon

The next Dungeons & Dragons book from publisher Wizards of the Coast will offer additional rules for character creation. Titled Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, it includes several new subclasses, as well as additional class features and feats. It will also offer up optional new rules for dealing with the concept of race, which lead rules designer Jeremy Crawford calls one of the main pillars of character creation. Today we’ll reveal exclusive new art from the book, and recap some of the changes coming when Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything is released on Nov. 17. Tasha’s Cauldron comes at a difficult time for the company, which in early 2020 was called out for the racism in its collectible card game, Magic: The Gathering, which led to banning several cards. The company was also...

Bridgerton trailer: Shondaland’s spicy, scandalous Regency romp – Polygon

It is a truth universally acknowledged that any show that teases Regency society, scandalous affairs, and sweeping ball gowns will appeal directly to me. Netflix’s new Regency era series Bridgerton combines Jane Austen-esque courtship with the high society scandal of Gossip Girl for a what looks like a sizzling good time. Bridgerton, Shondaland’s Netflix debut, follows Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of a powerful English family, as she makes her debut into London society. For those unfamiliar with the lingo of the Regency Era, that means Daphne is gearing up to fight every other eligible lady in London to secure a successful husband — in this case, the most ambitious catch of the season is the rebellious Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page). As if courtship an...

Ultrapotent COVID-19 Vaccine Designed via Computer: Innovative Nanoparticle Vaccine Spurs Extremely High Levels of Protective Antibodies – SciTechDaily

Artist’s depiction of an ultrapotent COVID-19 vaccine candidate in which 60 pieces of a coronavirus protein (red) decorate nanoparticles (blue and white). The vaccine candidate was designed using methods developed at the UW Medicine Institute for Protein Design. The molecular structure of the vaccine roughly mimics that of a virus, which may account for its enhanced ability to provoke an immune response. Credit: Ian Haydon/ UW Medicine Institute for Protein Design Preclinical data published in Cell show the nanoparticle vaccine spurs extremely high levels of protective antibodies in animal models. An innovative nanoparticle vaccine candidate for the pandemic coronavirus produces virus-neutralizing antibodies in mice at levels 10 times greater than is seen in people who have recove...
