Newly confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus among children in the U.S. are surging, reaching a one-week high last week, according to estimates from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).   The academy on Monday announced that as of Oct. 29, more than 853,000 children across the country have been infected with COVID-19, with some 200,000 new cases among children reported in October alone.  Though rare, some COVID-19-infected children have suffered from so-called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), an inflammatory condition that is similar to Kawasaki disease, which causes swelling in arteries throughout the body. The study, conducted by researchers in the UK, found evidence that certain T cells created to combat the coronavirus during infection continue to show a “robust” response at least six months later. The Restart-19 study, which sought to collect data on various activities at large indoor gatherings—such as concerts—was performed by a team at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg led by Dr. Stefan Moritz, the head of the University’s clinical infectious diseases department. The number of New York City residents who have been infected with the coronavirus may be six times greater than the official count, a new study suggests. Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai tested more than 10,000 blood samples for antibodies against COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. They found that about 22 percent of samples had antibodies, which means that around 1.7 million people in the city have previously been infected. That is a more than six-fold increase from the 256,881 infections that have been confirmed by health officials.
