Newly confirmed coronavirus cases among US children surge – Fox News

Newly confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus among children in the U.S. are surging, reaching a one-week high last week, according to estimates from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).   The academy on Monday announced that as of Oct. 29, more than 853,000 children across the country have been infected with COVID-19, with some 200,000 new cases among children reported in October alone.  Though rare, some COVID-19-infected children have suffered from so-called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), an inflammatory condition that is similar to Kawasaki disease, which causes swelling in arteries throughout the body. One Kind of Immunity to the Coronavirus Lasts at Least Six Months, Study Finds – Gizmodo

Blood samples about to be tested for covid-19 antibodies at a clinic in Moscow on May 15, 2020Photo: Vasily Maximov (Getty Images) New research this week offers some hope for at least one aspect of our immunity to the coronavirus that causes covid-19. The study, conducted by researchers in the UK, found evidence that certain T cells created to combat the coronavirus during infection continue to show a “robust” response at least six months later. This cellular immune response is thought to play an important role in preventing reinfection or lessening the severity of a subsequent infection, alongside other components of our immunity like antibodies. The new research is the work of the UK Coronavirus Immunology Consortium, a nationwide study backed by the UK government and involving se...

German Scientists Conduct Coronavirus Concert Experiment, Find Risk of Spread to Be “Low to Very Low” – Pitchfork

Back in August, a team of scientists conducted an experiment in the transmission of coronavirus at Quarterback Immobilien Arena in Leipzig, Germany. The Restart-19 study, which sought to collect data on various activities at large indoor gatherings—such as concerts—was performed by a team at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg led by Dr. Stefan Moritz, the head of the University’s clinical infectious diseases department. The results from the study have now been published online. The study recruited 1,400 volunteers who were then pre-tested for COVID-19, had their temperatures taken, and were outfitted with a digital location tracker, masks and hand disinfectant laced with fluorescent dye. They were then asked to simulate different scenarios over the course of 10 hours with various l...

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder opened up about the nutty advice he gave Bradley Cooper for the actor’s rock star role in “A Star Is Born.” Eddie Vedder and Bradley CooperGetty Images“We just hung out for a couple days. He just asked me a few questions and I told him things like, ‘Make sure your guitar covers your balls at all times,’” Eddie recently said on SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show.” Vedder, 55, explained the reasoning behind his feedback. “I think sometimes when the guitar gets a little bit high it looks like a bib,” he said. The singer added that he was pleasantly surprised by 45-year-old Cooper’s performance while filming because most actors just can’t get it right on screen. “On the way over, I’m thinkin...

Coronavirus NY: Study says 1.7m – 6 times official figure – infected – Daily Mail

The number of New York City residents who have been infected with the coronavirus may be six times greater than the official count, a new study suggests. Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai tested more than 10,000 blood samples for antibodies against COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. They found that about 22 percent of samples had antibodies, which means that around 1.7 million people in the city have previously been infected. That is a more than six-fold increase from the 256,881 infections that have been confirmed by health officials. Additionally, the team found that some patients had antibodies in late February, several days before New York City's first confirmed case in March, which indicates the coronavirus was circulating far earlier than previousl...

Dont get a false sense of security with Covid-19 testing. Heres why you can test negative but still be infected and contagious – CNN

It can take days before a new infection shows up on a Covid-19 test. "We know that the incubation period for Covid-19 is up to 14 days. And before that, you can be testing negative, and have no symptoms," emergency medicine physician Dr. Leana Wen told CNN. "But you could actually be harboring the virus and be able to transmit it to others." So if you want to get tested as a precaution before seeing friends or family, here's what you need to know: Probably not. A study in the medical journal Annals of Internal Medicine examined false-negative test results of people who actually had Covid-19. The study estimated that during four days of infection before symptoms typically started, the probability of getting an incorrect/negative test result on Day 1 was 100%. On the day peopl...
