Anne Hathaway Has Apologised For “Pain” Caused By Portrayal Of Limb Difference In “The Witches” – BuzzFeed

The film portrays witches as evil, highlighted by their bald heads, lack of toes, and hands with only three fingers. Several people, including Paralympic swimmer Amy Marren and triathlete Claire Cashmore, called out the filmmakers for their lack of consideration when characterising the witches. "Was there much thought given as to how this representation of limb differences would effect the limb difference community?" Marren wrote on Twitter. "My fear is that children will watch this film, unaware that it massively exaggerates the Roald Dahl original, and that limb differences begin to be feared," she added.

Scientists Just Successfully Regenerated Mouse Optic Nerve Cells in The Lab – ScienceAlert

Scientists have found a new way to regenerate damaged optic nerve cells taken from mice and grown in a dish. This exciting development could lead to potential eye disease treatments in the future.   Damage to full-grown nerve cells causes irreversible and life-altering consequences, because once nerve fibres mature, they lose their ability to regenerate after injury or disease. The new experiments show how activating part of a nerve cell's regenerative machinery, a protein known as protrudin, could stimulate nerves in the eye to regrow after injury.  With more research, the achievement is a step towards future treatments for glaucoma, a group of eye diseases which cause vision loss by damaging the optic nerve (that links the eye to the brain). "What we've seen is the strongest regene...

Call Me By My Pen Name

Verve People Text by Akshaya Pillai Unni R dreamt that he was in the wrong house. The bed felt unfamiliar and the window, tiny and too far away. When he woke up, he carried the confusion with him to the kitchen, where he threw open a window and let in whatever remained of the afternoon. While the water for his kattan kapi is boiling, Unni suppresses a yawn and stumbles for the record button, speaking into his phone: “In all my years of writing, it was the first time I had abandoned something. It was a period novel, and I was already 25 chapters in, but it just did not feel like the right time,” he says. Balanced on the fence, my cell phone shudders, and Unni’s voice plays to an audience of trees. I am in my yard, repurposing an old window fr...
