US Sees Record-Breaking Week In Coronavirus Cases : Shots – Health News – NPR

New coronavirus cases in the U.S. reached staggering highs this week, the second week in a row of record-breaking growth. Hospitalizations rose quickly, too, approaching levels that will soon eclipse the spring and summer peaks. On Wednesday, the country recorded more than 100,000 cases in a single day, a threshold Dr. Anthony Fauci warned lawmakers the U.S. could reach if the virus was not driven down before winter. By Thursday, cases had jumped even higher to more than 121,000 in one day. New U.S. cases are now up 55% over two weeks ago on average. "Cases are going up exponentially in many different parts of the country," says Dr. Albert Ko, professor and department chair of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at the Yale School of Public Health. Anne Hathaway apologizes to disability community amid The Witches backlash – CNN

The actress took to Instagram with a statement saying: "I have recently learned that many people with limb differences, especially children, are in pain because of the portrayal of the Grand High Witch in The Witches." She continued: "Let me begin by saying I do my best to be sensitive to the feelings and experiences of others not out of some scrambling PC fear, but because not hurting others seems like a basic level of decency we should all be striving for." Hathaway said she owes the community an apology and was sorry to see that she had caused anyone pain. "As someone who really believes in inclusivity and really, really detests cruelty, I owe you all an apology for the pain caused," she continued. "I am sorry. Johnny Depp Exits ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Franchise – Variety

Johnny Depp will no longer portray the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the “Fantastic Beasts” film franchise, the actor announced Friday. “I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request,” he wrote Friday on Instagram. Depp’s exit from the “Harry Potter” spinoff series comes days after he lost his libel case against the tabloid “The Sun” over a 2018 article alleging he was a “wife beater.” Depp said he plans to appeal the ruling. Warner Bros. confirmed Depp’s departure and announced his role will be recast before the third installment debuts. The studio also pushed back the release date for the upcoming entry, which was originally set for November 2021. ...

Nasal spray prevents COVID-19 infection in test animals, new study finds | TheHill – The Hill

Researchers have developed a nasal spray treatment that appears to prevent coronavirus infections in ferrets and could potentially be used to protect humans from contracting the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to a report from the New York Times.  A small study funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Columbia University Medical Center that has yet to be peer-reviewed details how the nasal spray protected ferrets from becoming infected with the virus that causes COVID-19.  Our country is in a historic fight against the Coronavirus. Llama nanobodies are powerful new COVID-19 treatment: study – New York Post

A llama named Wally may hold the key in the fight against the coronavirus, according to a new study. Researchers have discovered a way to extract “tiny but extremely powerful SARS-CoV-2 antibody fragments from llamas,” according to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, referring to the virus that causes COVID-19. The so-called “nanobodies” — much tinier than human antibodies and many times more effective at neutralizing the deadly bug — could be fashioned into inhalable therapeutics with the potential to prevent and treat the illness, according to the university. “Nature is our best inventor,” said Yi Shi, assistant professor of cell biology at Pitt. “The technology we developed surveys SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing nanobodies at an unprecedented scale, which allowed ...
