National Health Service patients in England waiting more than one year for non-coronavirus treatment is at its highest since 2008, with an NHS report admitting it was likely a result of the UK’s response to the pandemic. Figures released on Thursday revealed that in September the number of people waiting more than 52 weeks for the start of treatment was 139,545 — compared to 1,305 the same month last year. The data, seen by Sky News, also showed that hospitals in England missed several cancer targets. A team of Canadian researchers have developed an incredible system to reduce blood-alcohol levels three times faster than normal, using a simple, briefcase-sized device which could save millions of lives worldwide each year. The group of scientists, led by Dr. Joseph Fisher at the University Health Network, a medical research organization in Toronto, Canada, were exploring treatments for acute alcohol intoxication when they happened upon a novel solution that generated more than a few sighs of disbelief at how simple it was.  “It's almost inexplicable why we didn't try this decades ago,”says Fisher.  The new method involves recruiting the lungs to hyperventilate excess alcohol out of the body, which assists the liver in reducing alcohol levels in a patient’s bloodstream.  ...

Temperature and COVID-19 symptom checks like the ones used at schools and doctor’s offices have again proved inadequate for spotting coronavirus infections and preventing outbreaks. A study of Marine recruits found that despite these measures and strict quarantines before they started training, the recruits spread the virus to others even though hardly any of them had symptoms. None of the infections were caught through symptom screening. The study, published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, has implications for colleges, prisons, meatpacking plants and other places that rely on this sort of screening to detect infections and prevent outbreaks.
