North Dakota nurses call for mask mandate, reject policy allowing COVID-19-positive workers to stay on job | TheHill – The Hill

A North Dakota nurses union is rejecting a policy that would allow COVID-19-positive nurses to continue treating patients at coronavirus units of hospitals and nursing homes if they are not symptomatic. In a statement released Wednesday, the North Dakota Nurses Association said the policy does not address the root of the problem and called for a statewide mask mandate and other public health measures to be implemented first.  "NDNA recommends that all other public health measures to reduce the demand on the health care system and address staffing shortages are deployed before implementing this particular strategy," the union said. The new policy was announced Monday by Gov. Doug Burgum (R) as a way to ease pressure on hospitals that are short-staffed and nearing capacity as COV...

Phil Collins Says Ex Lied About His Hygiene to Try to Extort Him – TMZ

Exclusive Phil Collins says his ex's accusation about him reeking like hell is a blatant lie, and a cheap attempt to smear his name to get millions out of him. The famed hitmaker filed legal docs calling Orianne Cevey a liar after she claimed Phil became a hermit and completely secluded himself from the world. In docs, obtained by TMZ, Phil calls it "a litany of demonstrably false, immaterial, impertinent, scandalous and scurrilous allegations which have nothing to do with the legal claims in this case." In short ... Phil says Orianne's allegations have a clear malicious motive ... trying to extort him. He claims she lied about his depression to cast doubt about hi...

Simple Invention Helps You Sober Up by Exhaling Alcohol – Gizmodo

Above: Olivia Sobczyk, co-author and researcher at Toronto’s University Health Network, demonstrating how the ClearMate Device is used. Image: University Health Network Scientists in Canada say they’ve found a new way to treat potentially life-threatening alcohol intoxication—by helping people literally breathe out the alcohol in their system. Their device, which is designed to allow people to hyperventilate safely, was found to speed up the clearance of alcohol from healthy volunteers three times faster in a small pilot study. Usually, toxins like alcohol are largely broken down by the liver. The liver can take a lot of punishment, but the rate that it metabolizes alcohol is constant, meaning you can’t speed up the process in times when the amount of alcohol in your body is enough ...

Wearing a mask isn’t just about protecting other people, the CDC says. It can help you — and might prevent lockdowns. – The Washington Post

Now, a growing body of science suggests that by wearing a mask to prevent spreading the virus, you may be protecting yourself, too. It is further evidence that knowledge about masks, and their benefits, continues to evolve — much as does understanding of the pandemic more broadly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publicly acknowledged that for the first time, writing in a scientific bulletin posted to its website this week that “the benefit of masking is derived from the combination of source control and personal protection for the mask wearer.” Masks are neither completely selfless nor selfish — they help everyone. John Brooks, chief medical officer for the CDC’s coronavirus response, told The Washington Post there was an urgency to explain this clearly, because the wide...

Measles Deaths Soared Worldwide Last Year, as Vaccine Rates Stalled – The New York Times

Measles deaths worldwide swelled to their highest level in 23 years last year, according to a report released Thursday, a stunning rise for a vaccine-preventable disease and one that public health experts fear could grow as the coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt immunization and detection efforts. The global death tally for 2019 — 207,500 — was 50 percent higher than just three years earlier, according to the analysis, released jointly by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No measles deaths were reported in the United States, but measles cases in the country hit a record annual high of 1,282 across 31 states, the most since 1992, according to figures updated earlier this month. As recently as 2012, the U.S. case number was 55. Public ...

Who knew one little wink could cause such a big debate? In the blink of an eye (literally), Carrie Underwood had Twitter buzzing over a memorable moment at the 2020 CMA Awards on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Here's what happened: Eric Church, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban and Underwood were all nominated for Entertainer of the Year. Hosts Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker then named Church the winner. While Underwood and her fellow nominees smiled and gave Church a standing ovation upon hearing the news, fans couldn't help but notice she also gave a small wink. But who was it directed to, and what did it mean? Some think the gesture was aimed at Church. "Eric Church emotional while winning EOTY and Carrie giving him the tearful wink is such a loaded, fascinating TV moment," one view...

Alton Brown apologizes for poor taste tweet about the Holocaust – New York Post

Food Network celebrity chef Alton Brown has apologized after being roasted for making “flippant” remarks about the Holocaust on Twitter. In his since-deleted tone-deaf post Tuesday night, Grubstreet.com reported, the “Good Eats: Reloaded” host said: “Do you think the camp uniforms will be striped, like the ones at Auschwitz or will plaid be in vogue?” After a user said it “depends on what you’re worth when you go in,” Brown replied: “I have no gold fillings.” When another person warned him, “Yikes dude. Take it easy,” Brown fired back with, “F— you.” On Wednesday, the creator of “Good Eats” cooked up a mea culpa for his offensive tweets. “I apologize for the flippant reference I made to the Holocaust in my tweet last night. It was not a reference I made for humorous effe...
