500,000 sharks might have to die to fight COVID-19, advocacy group says – KHON2

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The path to a coronavirus vaccine could decimate the shark population because of an oil called squalene. [Hawaii’s Breaking News–Download the FREE KHON2 app for iOS or Android] Shark Allies, a nonprofit group that advocates against overfishing of sharks, recently released an estimate of how many sharks would have to die to produce enough of the oil—which is already used in certain flu vaccines—to serve people worldwide. In flu shots, about 10 mg of squalene is added to produce a more effective immune response, according to World Health Organization. The livers of sharks are mostly made of squalene and the animals use the oils to help regulate their buoyancy, Oceana says. The organization reports sharks that live in deeper waters have more oil ...

Also, outside a lab, infection depends mainly on breathing in viral particles from an infected person and normal contact doesn’t necessarily translate into infection for animals. Ferrets have been shown in the laboratory to be susceptible to infection with the virus, and to spread it to other ferrets. But scientists at Tufts reported, in a paper that has yet to be peer- reviewed, that in one house with 29 pet ferrets and two humans with Covid not one ferret became infected with the virus. The 29 ferrets roamed freely in the house, and both human adults were ill enough with Covid to show symptoms, so there was ample opportunity for infection. Kaitlin Sawatzki, a virologist at Tufts University and one of the authors of the ferret paper, said, “Isn’t that incredible? It was a beautiful natur...

Disney to lay off 28,000 employees as coronavirus slams its theme park business – CNBC

Prolonged closures at Disney's California-based theme parks and limited attendance at its open parks has forced the company to lay off 28,000 employees across its parks, experiences and consumer products division, the company said. In a memo sent to employees on Tuesday, Josh D'Amaro, head of parks at Disney, detailed several "difficult decisions" the company has had to make in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, including ending its furlough of thousands of employees. Shares of the company fell less than 2% after the closing bell on Tuesday. Around 67% of the 28,000 laid off workers were part-time employees, according to a statement by D'Amaro on Tuesday. The company declined to break down the layoffs by individual park locations. While Disney's theme parks in Florida, Par...

The company hasn’t detailed which platforms will have the show, but it’s in conversations with several, including Stitcher, Google, Apple, and iHeart. A Spotify spokesperson says future seasons, if the show’s renewed, will “debut exclusively” on Spotify, but didn’t say whether the show will be windowed or fully exclusive to the service. Obama’s show expansion could help Spotify find a larger...
