Maya Rudolph Wins First Two Emmys In Same Week; Says ‘The Good Place’ Judge Was Modeled On “Iconic Human Being” Ruth Bader Ginsberg – Deadline

Maya Rudolph has gone from zero to two Emmys in just three days. On Saturday night she snagged her second trophy of the week-long Creative Arts Emmys virtual ceremony—this time for her turn as Kamala Harris in Saturday Night Live, hosted by Eddie Murphy. And just this past Thursday, Rudolph took home her very first Emmy for voicing the role of Connie the Hormone Monstress in Big Mouth. Add to this the fact that Rudolph was double-nominated in her guest actress category Saturday night, the other nom being for her role as the judge in The Good Place, and it looks like this has been her year in terms of career recognition. She beat Bette Midler, Wanda Sykes, Angela Bassett and Phoebe Waller-Bridge to take home the gold this time. Related Story Creative Arts Emmys:...

Uptick in L.A. County’s COVID-19 case rate raises concerns over increased transmission during Labor Day holiday – KTLA Los Angeles

After weeks of improvement, a recent uptick in Los Angeles County’s daily coronavirus case rates is raising concerns over potential increased virus transmission from Labor Day holiday celebrations, public health officials said Saturday. “The recent increases in the number of new cases is of concern because it may reflect increased exposures associated with Labor Day activities,” County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said in a statement. Daily case rates have risen over the past four days and while health officials say the change can be attributed to the reopening of testing sites and more people getting tested this week, it may also suggest increased transmission over the Labor Day holiday. “We will be following our case numbers carefully over this upcoming ...

Creative Arts Emmys: Eddie Murphy, Maya Rudolph, RuPaul Among Major Victors (Full Winners List) – Variety

This year’s fifth and final night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies aired Saturday night “virtually live” on FXX, and viewers discovered that first hand, when a snafu happened late in the broadcast during the award for guest actor in a drama. When the winner was revealed, the screen read Ron Cephas Jones (“This Is Us”) — but the voice over announced Jason Bateman, from “The Outsider.” Producers quickly realized their mistake, and pulled the visual down, going to commercial. When the show returned, an on-screen note offered an apology: It turns out Cephas Jones was indeed the winner, although if he had sent in an acceptance speech, it wasn’t played. And so goes Emmy 2020, a most unusual year that has led to a most unusual s...

In ‘Power Grab,’ Health Secretary Azar Asserts Authority Over F.D.A. – The New York Times

In a stunning declaration of authority, Alex M. Azar II, the secretary of health and human services, this week barred the nation’s health agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, from signing any new rules regarding the nation’s foods, medicines, medical devices and other products, including vaccines. Going forward, Mr. Azar wrote in a Sept. 15 memorandum obtained by The New York Times, such power “is reserved to the Secretary.” The bulletin was sent to heads of operating and staff divisions within H.H.S. It’s unclear if or how the memo would change the vetting and approval process for coronavirus vaccines, three of which are in advanced clinical trials in the United States. Political appointees, under pressure from the president, have taken a string of steps over the past f...
