Too much candy: Man dies from eating bags of black licorice – Associated Press

A Massachusetts construction worker’s love of black licorice wound up costing him his life. Eating a bag and a half every day for a few weeks threw his nutrients out of whack and caused the 54-year-old man’s heart to stop, doctors reported Wednesday. “Even a small amount of licorice you eat can increase your blood pressure a little bit,” said Dr. Neel Butala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital who described the case in the New England Journal of Medicine. The problem is glycyrrhizic acid, found in black licorice and in many other foods and dietary supplements containing licorice root extract. It can cause dangerously low potassium and imbalances in other minerals called electrolytes. Eating as little as 2 ounces of black licorice a day for two weeks could cause a heart rhyt...

Massive genetic study shows coronavirus mutating and potentially evolving amid rapid U.S. spread – Boston.com

Scientists in Houston on Wednesday released a study of more than 5,000 genetic sequences of the coronavirus, which reveals the virus’s continual accumulation of mutations, one of which may have made it more contagious. That mutation is associated with a higher viral load among patients upon initial diagnosis, the researchers found. The study, which has not been peer-reviewed, was posted Wednesday on the preprint server MedRxiv. It appears to be the largest single aggregation of genetic sequences of the virus in the United States. A larger batch of sequences was published this month by scientists in the United Kingdom, and, like the Houston study, concluded that a mutation that changes the structure of the “spike protein” on the surface of the virus may be driving the outsize spr...

Portrait by Renaissance master expected to soar past $80M – Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — An enigmatic painting from Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli will go on auction next year and art watchers will be seeing if it fetches more than its eye-watering $80 million estimate, despite the pandemic. Botticelli’s 15th-century portrait of a nobleman in “Young Man Holding a Roundel” is the highlight of Sotheby’s Masters Week sale series in New York in January. “Just the sheer beauty of this has been a joy,” said Christopher Apostle, who has for more than three decades handled Old Masters and is now head of the division. “I can’t think of a Botticelli like this that’s been on the open international market.” Opportunities to acquire a Botticelli — the artist behind such masterpieces as “Primavera” and “The Birth of Venus” — are very rare. “The fact that there are 1...

Carole Baskin of Tiger King fame sued for defamation – Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Carole Baskin, who became a pop culture sensation due to Netflix’s docuseries “Tiger King,” is being sued for defamation by a former assistant. As part of the lawsuit, the daughters of Baskin’s former husband are seeking more information about what happened to their father, who disappeared mysteriously more than two decades ago. The amended complaint to an earlier lawsuit was filed Tuesday in state court in Tampa by Don Lewis’ three daughters, Donna Pettis, Lynda Sanchez, and Gale Rathbone, as well as his former assistant, Anne McQueen. It also names Baskin’s current husband and her tiger rescue sanctuary as defendants. The lawsuit said that Baskin defamed McQueen by posting a video diary entry on YouTube earlier this month in which she says McQueen played a role in ...

Five Seconds of Summer’s Ashton Irwin Sets Solo LP ‘Superbloom,’ Drops ‘Skinny Skinny’: Listen – Billboard

Five Seconds of Summer’s Ashton Irwin is going it alone with Superbloom, his debut solo album. The Aussie singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist cut the LP at his L.A. home in February, as the health crisis created some unexpected downtime. Irwin grabbed the opportunity to push himself, taking a deep dive into his own life and experiences. The result, a statement explains, is a “deeply personal, evocative and uncompromising” album spanning 10 tracks exploring his childhood, alcoholism, depression, body dysmorphia, death, addiction, despair and hope. “I had to reach a certain level of lyrical maturity in order to write about something I actually cared about. I think it’s always important as an artist to have a mission statement, like, ‘why do you make music? Why do you w...

Trump wishes Prince Harry luck with Meghan after election video – NBC News

LONDON — President Donald Trump took a swipe at the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle on Wednesday after comments she made urging fellow Americans to vote in the upcoming presidential elections. "I'm not a fan of hers and I would say this, and she probably has heard that, but I wish a lot of luck to Harry — he's going to need it," Trump told press at a White House news briefing. The President's comments follow a video made by Meghan and her husband Britain's Prince Harry where she said that every four years elections are stressed to be the "most important election of our lifetime." "But this one is," she said. The couple's video urged Americans to vote and to be mindful of the negative tone of online debates and to seek decency and "build communities of compassion," she said. While the Du...
