Horrifying Images Show How the Coronavirus Ravages Our Lungs – Gizmodo UK

Here’s a closer look at the coronavirus that causes covid-19, courtesy of new research published in the New England Journal of Medicine Thursday. These images depicting the coronavirus en masse infecting human lung cells aren’t just for show either – they might just provide a hint as to why covid-19 can be so devastating to our bodies. Camille Ehre, a pediatric pulmonologist and lung researcher at the University of North Carolina, and her team created the photo opportunity to understand exactly how the coronavirus interacts with the lung’s airways upon infection, as well as how these infected cells behaved once they were hijacked by the virus. They used cells from the epithelium, or surface, of the lung’s tree-like airways, taken from transplanted lungs, and grew them in the ...

Warning tag on school masks upset some Collier County parents – Wink News

COLLIER COUNTY A Collier County School District face covering has some parents upset due to the warning on its tag. It reads: “Not intended to prevent or eliminate exposure to any disease, infection or communicable disease.” “Modern science tells us that these masks were never designed to prevent the spread of diseases, so I wasn’t surprised that it was on there because it is true,” said parent Chadwin Taylor. “That’s why this tag exists; it’s on here because it does not help with those things. This is a scare tactic and a control tactic … which is unthinkable in a free country.” But medical experts still stress the importance of wearing a mask. Robert Hawkes, director of Florida Gulf Coast University’s physician assista...

Over 30 million people told Facebook if they had the coronavirus or wore masks — and now it will be used for science – CNBC

Dr. Farzad Mostashari presenting on syndromic surveillance. Farzad Mostashari When Carnegie Mellon researchers had the idea to put together a survey asking the general public about their coronavirus symptoms, the scientists knew they needed to collect millions of data points to learn anything meaningful. So they asked Facebook, which has a public team that specializes in using analytics for humanitarian causes called "Data for Good," for its help.  The survey, which went live to Facebook's billions of users about six months ago, has so far collected data from more than 30 million people around the world. The survey asks whether they tested positive for the virus, if they wear masks and practice socially distancing as well as if they're currently experiencing...

"There were so many other bigger issues out there," the former Olympian said -- plus, Kim's hilarious reaction on learning her new name. Caitlyn Jenner says her being transgender "was not a big part" of her divorce, but she did stop short of saying it wasn't at the very least an underlying factor in the dissolution of her marriage with Kris Jenner after 23 years. "There were so many other bigger issues out there," she told Rob Lowe on his Literally! podcast. She did, however concede that "because of my frustration with myself I might have been a little bit shorter with her, you know, near the end." The US coronavirus death toll is projected to reach 410,000 in the next four months – CNN

The model from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation points to declining mask use in some regions from a peak in usage in early August. The scenarios in the model suggest 122,000 of those lives could be saved with near-universal mask use. It also warns the death toll could be much higher -- over 620,000 -- if all restrictions are eased. "If a herd immunity strategy is pursued, meaning no further government intervention is taken from now to Jan 1st, the death toll could increase to 620,000," according to IHME's briefing. IHME expects the death rate could reach an unprecedented 3,000 a day by December, due in part to "declining vigilance of the public." The IHME model is more aggressive in its predictions than others. It comes a day after a new CDC en...

Its the worst disaster of the pandemic. But WHO chief says our lack of concern shows moral bankruptcy – CNN

"No, when the elderly are dying it's not fine. It's a moral bankruptcy," he told a news conference. "Every life, whether it's young or old, is precious and we have to do everything to save it." But despite vast numbers of elderly people dying of coronavirus -- and a significant drop in the quality of life of many of those forced to self-isolate -- the global response to the risks they face in the era of Covid-19 has often been chilling. 'How much is a life worth?' When Sweden took the controversial decision not to lock down, the country's chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell told a local newspaper that its Public Health Agency "didn't know that there would be such a big potential for the disease to spread in elderly care homes, with so many deaths." But he said the country's main strate...
