Mike Sexton, one of the most recognizable and influential personalities in the modern poker world, died Sunday of prostate cancer. He was 72. Sexton, a 2009 inductee into the Poker Hall of Fame, served as one-half of a commentary team for the World Poker Tour alongside Vince Van Patten from the tour's first TV broadcast in March 2003 through 2017, when Sexton retired to become the chairman of online poker platform partypoker. Sexton had been influential during partypoker's launch in 2001. As both a promoter of the platform and in his role as a commentator and player, Sexton was one of the key figures in driving the worldwide poker boom in the early 2000s -- an era that saw tournament prize pools balloon by millions of dollars and online poker cash games grow. Children who catch the common could be immune to MIS-C – Daily Mail

Children who have previously caught the common cold have coronavirus antibodies that prevent them from developing the hyper-inflammatory condition called MIS-C, new research suggests.   The rare disease is caused by infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the same pathogen responsible for the current COVID-19 pandemic.  Research has found the condition, known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), is different to both COVID-19 and Kawasaki disease.  However, little is known about why some children, roughly a month after being infected with the coronavirus, develop MIS-C symptoms.  Indicators of the disease include a rash, fever and abdominal pain as well as conjunctivitis, a cough and a headache.  Experts at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden compared healthy childr...

“Second wave” of coronavirus may not come in winter (but could arrive in spring) – Yahoo! Voices

Predictions of a “second wave” of coronavirus arriving with the onset of the cold winter months could be wrong, a scientist has said.  Professor Ben Neuman, chairman of biological sciences at Texas A&M University-Texarkana and visiting associate professor at the University of Reading, said that coronaviruses typically “peak” in spring. Neuman said that predictions around coronavirus tend to lean too heavily on the influenza virus - which peaks in winter, but that most viruses are not as strictly seasonal as the flu. Neuman said that some viruses normally peak in spring, including most coronaviruses, and others peak in summer or autumn, like poliovirus. ‘Really Diabolical’: Inside the Coronavirus That Outsmarted Science – The Wall Street Journal

The new coronavirus is a killer with a crowbar, breaking and entering human cells with impunity. It hitchhikes across continents carried on coughs and careless hands, driven by its own urgent necessity to survive. It has a gregarious side that makes it hard to resist. It loves a party. The persistent social climber claims its victims around the world by riding on moments of the most innocent of human interactions—a shared laugh, a conversation, an embrace. And it is a liar. SARS-CoV-2, which causes Covid-19, often misleads...

Enola Holmes Review: Millie Bobby Brown Shines in Netflix Adventure – Collider.com

In the past, I’ve lamented the decline of the PG adventure movie. Kids are either shunted off into family-friendly animated features or they’re thrust into the blockbuster fare of PG-13 summer tentpoles. It’s getting harder to find movies that are appropriate for the 9-12 set while also being terrific. Enter Enola Holmes, a cinematic and electrifying adaptation of a YA book series that focuses on Sherlock Holmes’ kid sister. Developed as a feature in part by star Millie Bobby Brown (who also serves as a producer on the film), Enola Holmes is a pure delight from start to finish that spins a captivating mystery yarn worthy of its protagonist’s surname while being family friendly enough that parents won’t have to worry about anything too dark scaring their yo...

Some COVID-19 patients suffer lung and heart damage, but there’s encouraging news for these ‘long haulers’ – MarketWatch

Up until she fell ill with COVID-19, Yvonne Cassidy, a New York-based novelist, said she thought there were only three types of COVID: “The mild version, the version that put you in hospital and the version that killed you. I didn’t know there were others like me, stuck on a post-COVID plateau, not sick anymore, but not better either.” Two months after being diagnosed with coronavirus, she found it difficult to even walk one block. “It turned out we were a group who had a name: We were COVID long-haulers. The Mayo Clinic and medical journals had published pieces about us,” she said. “We had support groups on social media. We even had a hashtag. We were frustrated and afraid.” “With my doctor’s guidance I introduced a very slow five-minute jog into my already slow walking schedule. The ...
